Abstract: A wearable medical includes a walking detector module with a motion sensor that is configured to detect when the patient is walking or running. In embodiments, a parameter (referred to herein as a “Bouncy” parameter) is determined from Y-axis acceleration measurements. In some embodiments, the Bouncy parameter is a measurement of the AC component of the Y-axis accelerometer signal. This detection can be used by the medical device to determine how and/or whether to provide treatment to the patient wearing the medical device. For example, when used in a WCD, the walking detector can prevent “false alarms” because a walking patient is generally conscious and not in need of a shock.

Abstract: A system can include a near-field instrument to be placed inside a chamber of a heart, a far-field instrument to be placed in a stable position in relation to the heart, and a control unit. The control unit is configured to identify a unique pattern in electrogram information received from the far-field instrument when the near-field instrument is in one or more positions within the heart. When the unique pattern is detected, the control unit is configured to receive electrogram information from the near-field instrument. While recording electrogram information from the near-field instrument, the control unit is also configured to record voltage and complex fractionated atrial electrogram (CFAE) characteristics of the tissue inside a heart chamber. This information combined with rotor information can be used to identify substrate versus non-substrate rotor characteristics.

Abstract: A medical device system and method for detecting dislodgement of a lead determines one or more characteristics of a cardiac signal received via the lead that are associated with dislodgement of the lead during atrial fibrillation, and detects dislodgement of the ventricular lead based on the determined characteristics. The medical device and system provides a lead dislodgment alert in response to detecting dislodgement. In some examples, an implantable medical device withholds delivery of a defibrillation therapy based on detecting dislodgement of the lead.

Abstract: A method for analysis of cardiac rhythms, based on calculations of entropy and moments of interbeat intervals. An optimal determination of segments of data is provided that demonstrate statistical homogeneity, specifically with regard to moments and entropy. The invention also involves calculating moments and entropy on each segment with the goal of diagnosis of cardiac rhythm. More specifically, an absolute entropy measurement is calculated and provided as a continuous variable, providing dynamical information of fundamental importance in diagnosis and analysis. Through the present invention, standard histograms, thresholds, and categories can be avoided.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for monitoring cardiovascular health are provided. The apparatus includes a housing, a control circuitry, an inflatable cuff for surrounding an upper limb of a user, a pump contained in the housing, at least a first electrode and a second electrode, and an ear-worn structure having the first electrode mounted thereon. When performing blood pressure measurement, the processor controls the pump to inflate and deflate the cuff, for measuring blood pressure of the user. When performing electrocardiographic signal measurement, through mounting the ear-worn structure on an ear of the user, the first electrode contacts the skin of the ear or around the ear, and through mounting the cuff surrounding the upper limb, the second electrode contacts the skin of the upper limb, enabling the processor to acquire electrocardiographic signals through the first electrode and the second electrode.

Abstract: A medical device to monitor and treat a patient includes at least one ECG sensing electrode configured to sense a patient ECG signal, a plurality of therapy electrodes configured to deliver one or more therapeutic shocks, and a controller. The controller is configured to select a first ECG template based on a first ECG signal received during a first period of time, select a second ECG template based on determining from a second ECG signal received during a second period of time that the second ECG template represents a better fit, determine whether the patient is experiencing a treatable cardiac event based in part on one or more morphological differences between the second ECG signal and one or more of the first and second ECG template, and cause the medical device to initiate a treatment sequence in response to determining that the patient is experiencing the treatable cardiac event.

Abstract: The system and method provide for electrocardiogram analysis and optimization of patient-customized cardiopulmonary resuscitation and therapy delivery. An external medical device includes a housing and a processor within the housing. The processor can be configured to receive an input signal for a patient receiving chest compressions and to select at least one filter mechanism and to apply the filter mechanism to the signal to at least substantially remove chest compression artifacts from the signal. A real time dynamic analysis of a cardiac rhythm is applied to adjust and integrate CPR prompting of a medical device. Real-time cardiac rhythm quality is facilitated using a rhythm assessment meter.
