First and second coil compression springs (R20, R30) are aligned with each other and surround the shock absorber (7). One of these springs bears against one of the abutments and the other of the springs bears against the other of the abutments. A cup (32) is disposed between the springs, this cup surrounding the body and being movable lengthwise of the body. Both of the springs bear on the cup (32). An annular jack (5) is fixed to and surrounds the body and comprises one (10) of the abutments. A third abutment (31) is fixed to the body a distance from the jack (5). An elastic ring (54) is compressible between the cup (32) and the third abutment (31). A movable jacket (4) surrounds and is slidable in sealed relationship on the body (6) and on the annular jack (5) and defines with the body (6) and jack (5) a hydraulic chamber of variable size. Provision (8, 9) is made to deliver hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic chamber to vary the size of the hydraulic chamber. A third coil compression spring (11) surrounds the body (6) and acts between the third abutment (31) and the jacket (4).

Said shock-absorbing device includes a damping assembly (1) having, on the inside thereof, a piston (2) connected to a rod (17), the piston (2) and the rod (17) combined therewith being movable, in both the compression and expansion direction, about a static position inside the damping assembly (1) in order to provide a shock-absorbing function, the inside of the damping assembly (1) being filled with a hydraulic fluid, characterized in that said assembly (1) engages with a means for varying the damping effect so as to produce: a compression phase consisting of a compression sub-phase, directed from the static position toward the maximum compression position of the piston (2), and of an expansion sub-phase, directed from said maximum compression position toward the static position, respectively, and an expansion phase consisting of an expansion sub-phase, directed from the static position toward the position of maximum expansion of the piston (2), and of an expansion sub-phase, directed from said maximum position toward the static position, respectively, the means for varying the damping elect controlling the damping assembly such that the damping value of the compression sub-phase of the compression phase and/or the expansion sub-phase of the expansion phase is different from the damping value of the expansion sub-phase of the compression phase and the compression sub-phase of the expansion phase, respectively. The invention has for its object a suspension with dynamically variable flexibility or stiffness. The suspension process uses one or several elastic elements mounted opposite each other, so as to impress on the vehicle suspension a variation of stiffness or of flexibility having two slopes on the curve (shock-relaxation and compression effort) and the use of different stiffnesses or flexibilities is localized during operation of the suspension in the vicinity of the position of the loaded vehicle on its wheels and that the least stiffness is located on the second portion of the course of collapse of the wheel suspension. The invention is applicable to suspensions particularly for automotive vehicles.
