Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for processing a set of communicated signals associated with a set of muscles, such as the muscles near the larynx of the person, or any other muscles the person use to achieve a desired response. The method includes the steps of attaching a single integrated sensor, for example, near the throat of the person proximate to the larynx and detecting an electrical signal through the sensor. The method further includes the steps of extracting features from the detected electrical signal and continuously transforming them into speech sounds without the need for further modulation. The method also includes comparing the extracted features to a set of prototype features and selecting a prototype feature of the set of prototype features providing a smallest relative difference.
Abstract:
A computerized method for modifying an optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network is described. The method includes providing an initial configuration of the optical WDM network. At least one parameter that represents a characteristic of a span in the optical WDM network as defined by the initial configuration is evaluated. The initial configuration of the optical WDM network is modified in response to the evaluation. The method can also include determining if a predetermined set of engineering rules are satisfied.
Abstract:
A method and system for asserting control over and protecting the privacy of individuals' personal and transactional information, to prevent unauthorized use thereof, and permit limited use thereof, with compensation, to the extent permitted the individual. Privacy notices are given in printed and electronic form to other parties involved in the individuals' transactions. The individuals' own data are collected and maintained in a privacy trust database. On a voluntary basis, abstracted, anonymous profile information can be made available to advertisers, in exchange for compensation to the individuals. One use is in a content broadcasting system, where receipt of profile based viewer-specific commercial messages provide financial compensation for the cost of user-selected content received by the individual.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed methods for identifying compounds that have a tissue protective activity using a heteromultimer receptor complex that mediates the tissue protective activities. The complex consists of at least one EPO-R in complex with at least one βc Receptor. These compounds used in the assays to identify tissue protective compounds include, but are not limited to, small molecules and biologics. The compounds identified using these assays can be used to treat or prevent various diseases, disorders, or conditions of the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as those of other erythropoietin-responsive or excitable cells, tissues, and organs.

Abstract:
Provided herein are tissue protective peptides derived from or sharing consensus sequences with portions of cytokine receptor ligands, including Erythropoietin (EPO), that are generally located on or within the region of the cytokine receptor ligand that faces away from a receptor complex while the ligand is bound to the receptor. Also provide herein are fragments, chimeras, as well as peptides designed to mimic the spatial localization of key amino acid residues within the tissue protective receptor ligands, e.g., EPO; methods for treating or preventing a disease or disorder using tissue protective peptides; and methods for enhancing excitable tissue function using tissue protective peptides.

Abstract:
A lipstick or gloss applicator is provided with a container for lipstick or gloss that is attached to a brush handle. The container is closed with a conical slit wiper/scraper. The handle for the applicator has a cap for closing the container and houses a power source, motor and transmission for rotating an attached brush and parts of replicas of individuals, animals or objects and a light.
Abstract:
A method for assigning a grade to a liquid hydrocarbon fuel in relation to the potential for a water or water-based phase to form in said fuel is provided, said method comprising sensing the electrical resistance of the fuel; sensing the capacitance of the fuel; determining the amount of water or water-soluble compounds in said fuel wherein the step of determining the amount of water or water-soluble compounds includes the step of comparing the electrical resistance of the fuel to a plurality pre-determined values of electrical resistance corresponding to a plurality of concentrations of water or water-soluble compounds in the fuel; identifying which water-soluble compound or compounds are present in said fuel wherein the step of identifying which compound or compounds are present includes the step of comparing the capacitance to a plurality of pre-determined values of capacitance corresponding to a water or a plurality of water-soluble compounds that may be present; sensing the temperature of said fuel, and calculating the potential for a water or water-soluble phase to form in said fuel during anticipated temperature conditions of transportation or storage.
