Abstract: Methods, apparatus and systems for recognizing sign language movements using multiple input and output modalities. One example method includes capturing a movement associated with the sign language using a set of visual sensing devices, the set of visual sensing devices comprising multiple apertures oriented with respect to the subject to receive optical signals corresponding to the movement from multiple angles, generating digital information corresponding to the movement based on the optical signals from the multiple angles, collecting depth information corresponding to the movement in one or more planes perpendicular to an image plane captured by the set of visual sensing devices, producing a reduced set of digital information by removing at least some of the digital information based on the depth information, generating a composite digital representation by aligning at least a portion of the reduced set of digital information, and recognizing the movement based on the composite digital representation.

Abstract: A translation device includes a character string output unit, a fixed phrase acquisition unit, a matching unit, a division processor, and. a translation result output unit. The character string output unit outputs a plurality of character strings each configuring at least part of text in a first language and including a head. character of the text, in order of character string length. The fixed phrase acquisition unit acquires a fixed phrase in the first language associated with a translation phrase in a second language. The matching unit calculates a similarity between each of the character strings and the fixed phrase in order of the character string length. The division processor divides the text at a position achieving a maximum similarity among values of the similarity exceeding a first threshold. The translation result output unit outputs the translation phrase as translation of the text thus divided.

Abstract: The present teaching relates to generating a conversational agent. In one example, a plurality of input utterances may be received from a developer. A paraphrase model is obtained. The paraphrase model is generated based on machine translation. For each of the plurality of input utterances, one or more paraphrases of the input utterance are generated based on the paraphrase model. For each of the plurality of input utterances, at least one of the one or more paraphrases is selected based on an instruction from the developer to generate selected paraphrases. The conversational agent is generated based on the plurality of input utterances and the selected paraphrases.
