Abstract: A balloon catheter that includes an elongated main body, a balloon connected to the elongated main body, and a base layer on the outer surface of the balloon. The base layer includes a water-soluble low-molecular weight compound. The balloon catheter also includes a plurality of elongate bodies extending radially away from the outer surface of the balloon. The elongate bodies are crystals of a water-insoluble drug. The elongate bodies each possesses an independent longitudinal axis. At least part of at least some of the elongate bodies are located in the interior of the base layer on the outer surface of the balloon.

Abstract: A balloon catheter is disclosed having a balloon at a distal portion of a catheter shaft and on a surface of the balloon are elongate bodies which are crystals of a water-insoluble drug having independent long axes. The balloon in a deflated state has a plurality of wing portions in a circumferential direction of the balloon, and a circumferential surface portion along a circumferential direction of the catheter shaft, the plurality of wing portions being folded along the circumferential direction of the balloon. A surface of the circumferential surface portion which faces the plurality of wing portions that are folded has a region in which tip portions are not in contact with the surface of the balloon or with other elongate bodies, and a surface which faces the plurality of wing portions that are folded which faces an outer circumferential side has a region in which the tip portions are in contact with the surface of the balloon or with the other elongate bodies.

Abstract: A method of treating peripheral artery diseases in lower limbs by providing a medical device having an expandable member having a drug coating layer which has a crystalline morphological form including a plurality of crystal particles of a water-insoluble drug regularly arranged and uniformly sized on the surface of the medical device, inserting the medical device in peripheral blood vessels, expanding the expandable member, pressing the drug coating layer to a blood vessel wall such that at least part of the plurality of crystals are transferred to the blood vessel wall, and deflating the expandable member such that a pharmacokinetics profile is presented in which a drug concentration in the blood vessels is kept for the inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation in a high drug-concentration period of time, and for the non-inhibition of endothelial cell growth in a later low drug-concentration period of time.

Abstract: A balloon catheter that includes an elongated main body extending in an axial direction and a balloon connected to the distal portion of the elongated main body. The balloon includes an interior and is inflatable and deflatable. The balloon catheter also includes a plurality of elongate bodies extending radially away from the outer surface of the balloon. The elongate bodies are crystals of a water-insoluble drug. The elongate bodies each possess an independent longitudinal axis. Each of the elongate bodies includes a base portion at the proximal end of the elongate body. A plurality of elongate body proximal portions extend radially inwardly from the base portion of each of the elongate bodies toward the interior of the balloon. The elongate body proximal portions are continuous extensions of the crystal of the water-insoluble drug.

Abstract: A method of inhibiting thickening of vascular intima by providing a medical device having an expandable member having a drug coating layer which has a crystalline morphological form including a plurality of crystal particles of a water-insoluble drug regularly arranged and uniformly sized on the surface of the medical device, inserting the medical device in peripheral blood vessels, expanding the expandable member, pressing the drug coating layer to a blood vessel wall such that at least part of the plurality of crystals are transferred to the blood vessel wall, and deflating the expandable member such that a vascular intima thickening is inhibited uniformly in an entire treated lesion of stenosis to uniformly cause patency of the lesion.

Abstract: A balloon catheter by which a drug can be effectively delivered to living body tissue and a method of manufacturing the balloon catheter, and a treatment method. The balloon catheter is provided on an outer surface of a balloon with a plurality of elongate bodies which are independent crystals of a water-insoluble drug that extend in an elongate form. The elongate bodies have long axes extending in directions along the outer surface of the balloon when the balloon is in a deflated state. Deformation, when the balloon is inflated from the deflated state, of portions on an outer surface side of the balloon to which end portions of the elongate bodies are fixed causes a force to act on the elongate bodies such that the long axes of the elongate bodies approach perpendicularity to the outer surface of the balloon.
