摘要: A cutting element has an upper body and a shaft extending from a lower side of the upper body. The upper body includes a cutting face opposite the lower side and bordered by a cutting edge, a side surface extending from the cutting edge, wherein an upper body diameter is measured between the side surface, and a catalyst-free polycrystalline diamond (CFPCD) portion forming the cutting face, the cutting edge, and at least a portion of the side surface. The CFPCD portion has a diamond matrix formed of a plurality of bonded together diamond grains, wherein diamond forms at least 99 percent by volume of the CFPCD portion, and wherein the CFPCD portion extends at least 1 mm from the cutting face. The shaft has a circumferential groove extending around its circumference and a shaft diameter less than the upper body diameter.

摘要: A method of forming a composite cutter for a downhole drilling tool is described. The method includes: mixing a polycrystalline diamond powder and a cubic boron nitride powder with a molar ratio between 0.1 and 0.9 to form a catalyst-free composite mixture; placing the catalyst-free composite mixture into a mold configured in a shape of a cutter; exposing the catalyst-free composite mixture to an ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature treatment including a pressure between 11 Gigapascals (GPa) and 20 GPa, and a temperature between 1300 Kelvins (K) and 2600 K to form a solid composite body; and cooling the solid composite body to form the composite cutter.

摘要: Systems and methods include a computer-implemented method can be used to make drilling tools from new wurtzite boron nitride (w-BN) superhard material. An ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature operation is performed on pure w-BN powder to synthesize w-BN and cubic boron nitride (c-BN) compact having a first size greater than particles of the pure w-BN powder. The ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature operation includes pressurizing the w-BN powder to a pressure of approximately 20 Gigapascal, heating the w-BN powder at a heating rate of 100° C./minute and cooling the w-BN powder at a cooling rate of 50° C./minute. The compact is cut to a second size smaller than the first size using laser cutting tools. The cut compact is bonded metallurgically, mechanically, or both metallurgically and mechanically onto a tool substrate to form the drilling tool.

摘要: A downhole sub has a body defined by a wall extending in an axial direction from a first end to a second end. An inner surface of the wall defines a flow path through the downhole sub and an outer surface of the wall defines an outer diameter of the downhole sub. A compartment extends from the outer surface into the wall to having a depth less than a thickness of the wall. A housing may be removably fixed in the compartment. One or more mobile devices may be disposed in the housing. Each of the one or more mobile devices includes a sensor encapsulated in a protective material. A control element may block an opening of the housing, the control element is made of a dissolvable material configured to dissolve at a predetermined depth in a wellbore and release the one or more mobile devices into the wellbore.

摘要: A system includes sensing modules positioned along a length of a drill string. Each sensing module includes a structure arrangement composed of an outer structure body having a cavity and an inner structure body rotatably supported within the cavity. The structure arrangement is coupled to the drill string such that rotation of the drill string produces a relative rotation between the structure bodies. Ball elements are disposed in a gap between the structure bodies and move along a predetermined path defined in the gap in response to relative rotation between the structure bodies. Movable elements are positioned to physically interact with the ball elements as the ball elements move along the predetermined path. Energy harvesters in the sensor modules generate electrical energy from the mechanical energy produced by physical interaction between the ball elements and movable elements. The sensing modules include sensors to measure parameters in the drill string environment.

摘要: An example system for operation in a borehole in a hydrocarbon-bearing rock formation includes a logging tool for detecting one or more conditions in the borehole. The logging tool includes a tool body and a 4D printed sensing element. The 4D printed sensing element includes a 3D printed shape-memory material configured to alter in at least one spatial dimension in response to one or more stimuli, thereby generating a data signal. The example system includes a data recording device in communication with the logging tool to receive and record one or more data signals transmitted from the logging tool.

摘要: Methods and systems for monitoring conditions within a wellbore of a subterranean well include extending a drill string into the subterranean well from a terranean surface. The drill string has an actuator assembly, a sensor compartment, and a plurality of sensors located within the sensor compartment. The actuator assembly is instructed to transmit a swarm release signal to a central power unit of the sensor compartment so that the central power unit of the sensor compartment releases certain of the plurality of sensors from the sensor compartment. Data from the sensors is transferred to a data processing system after the sensors reach the terranean surface.

摘要: Tools and methods are described to measure dimensions of wellbores. Downhole caliper tools include a downhole collar and an uphole collar having a running position and a sensing position. The uphole collar is farther from the downhole collar in the running position than in the sensing position. A caliper sensor assembly includes: a sensor module defining tracks extending parallel to an axis of the caliper tool, the sensor module positioned towards an uphole end of the caliper tool relative to the uphole collar; and a caliper disposed between the downhole collar and the uphole collar including: a flexible mesh extending from the downhole collar to the uphole collar. Movement of the uphole collar from the running position to the sensing position axially compresses and radially expands the flexible mesh. The annular sensor module can measure dimensions of the flexible mesh relative to the axis of the caliper tool.
