    Abstract: Disclosed herein are various embodiments of systems for drilling and operating a well which may have dual uses. The well may be drilled and operated as a geothermal well using a hybrid approach where a heat transfer fluid is injected into a hot rock formation but is not removed, and heat is extracted using a closed loop method. The geothermal well is then evaluated for use as a carbon dioxide sequestration well. In other embodiments, the well is drilled as a carbon dioxide sequestration well and then evaluated for its potential for generating geothermal energy using a hybrid approach where supercritical carbon dioxide is injected into a hot rock formation but is not removed, and heat is extracted using a closed loop method. Both horizontal and vertical wells are disclosed, in sedimentary rocks and in basement granite.

    Abstract: A drill bit comprises a first and a second body received within the first body. Each of the first body and second body has a respective crown, each crown having an inner and an outer operative circumference. The outer operative circumference of the second body and the inner operative circumference of the first body can define a first volume that can receive a tubular core sample. The second body can define a break surface that breaks the tubular core sample into core pieces. The drill bit can be employed in a borehole with a reverse circulation system that pumps fluid around an outer surface of the bit, and returning fluid can carry the core pieces out of the borehole.

    Abstract: A method of forming a composite cutter for a downhole drilling tool is described. The method includes: mixing a polycrystalline diamond powder and a cubic boron nitride powder with a molar ratio between 0.1 and 0.9 to form a catalyst-free composite mixture; placing the catalyst-free composite mixture into a mold configured in a shape of a cutter; exposing the catalyst-free composite mixture to an ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature treatment including a pressure between 11 Gigapascals (GPa) and 20 GPa, and a temperature between 1300 Kelvins (K) and 2600 K to form a solid composite body; and cooling the solid composite body to form the composite cutter.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for visualizing data from radially-oriented look-ahead sensors coupled to a drill bit are disclosed herein. A system comprises a processor, a memory, and a data analysis module. The data analysis module is operable to receive formation information from each of a plurality of formation sensors coupled to a downhole drilling system, the formation information being associated with one or more properties of a formation at a depth in front of the downhole drilling system, receive angular information from one or more orientation sensors coupled to the downhole drilling system, the angular information being associated with the formation information, compile sensor data based on the formation information and the angular information, and generate a visualization based on the sensor data.
