摘要: A method for generating a log of a value of a property of a fluid in an earth formation versus depth includes: obtaining a plurality of samples of drilling fluid that are entrained with a formation gas and correlating each sample to a depth in a borehole from which the formation gas was entrained in the drilling fluid; extracting the formation gas from each sample to provide a plurality of gas samples; analyzing each formation gas sample to provide a chemical composition of each formation gas sample in the plurality of formation gas samples; and determining a property value of the fluid in the earth formation versus depth using the chemical composition of each formation gas sample in the plurality of formation gas samples to provide the log.

摘要: A method for generating a phase envelope log to characterize a subsurface formation includes drilling the borehole with a drill string, circulating a drilling fluid in the borehole, drawing a fluid sample representing a fluid contained in the subsurface formation, estimating a PVT parameter indicative of an in-situ condition of the subsurface formation from the drawn fluid sample, determining at least two phase envelopes at different depths using the estimated PVT parameter, and creating a phase envelope log formed of a continuous series of phase envelopes using the phase envelopes. A related system includes a drill string, a fluid sampling system, and a processor that estimates a PVT parameter indicative of an in-situ condition of the subsurface formation, determines at least two phase envelopes at different depths using the PVT parameter, and creates the phase envelope log.

摘要: An example computer-implemented method for transmitting data from a downhole location to the earth's surface. The method includes sensing, with one or more sensors, sensor data downhole, the sensor data comprising a plurality of data value sets. The method further includes assigning at least one data value of each of the plurality of data value sets to each of a plurality of time levels or depth levels to generate a data block. The method further includes compressing, with a first processor in the drilling assembly, the data block by a block-based compression technique to generate compressed data. The method further includes transmitting, with a telemetry system, the compressed data from the downhole location to the surface. The method further includes decompressing, with a second processor at the surface, the compressed data to generate decompressed data values. The method further includes controlling the drilling assembly based on the decompressed data values.
