Systems, methods, and apparatus for living object protection having extended functionality in wireless power transfer applications are provided. In one aspect, an apparatus for detecting objects in a detection area near a wireless power transfer system is provided. The apparatus comprises a plurality of radar transceivers integrated into a wireless power transmitter, each transceiver configured to transmit and receive radar signals. The apparatus comprises at least one processor configured to receive radar data from the plurality of radar transceivers. The processor is configured to compare responses in the received radar data from each of the plurality of radar transceivers. The processor is configured to determine a presence of a vehicle at a first distance from the plurality of radar transceivers based at least in part on a correlation of the responses in the received radar data from each of the plurality of radar transceivers. The processor is configured to filter portions of the received radar data corresponding to movement within a predetermined range of distances from the plurality of radar transceivers that includes the first distance.

One aspect of the disclosure provides a power receiver configured to wirelessly transfer power from at least one power transmitter. The power receiver comprises a plurality of magnetic oscillators, each magnetic oscillator of the plurality of magnetic oscillators having a mechanical resonant frequency substantially equal to a first frequency, the plurality of magnetic oscillators configured to generate a first time-varying magnetic field in response to exposure to a second time-varying magnetic field. The power receiver further comprises at least one current circuit configured to generate a time-varying electric current in response to exposure to the first time-varying magnetic field. The first time-varying magnetic field has an operating frequency substantially equal to the first frequency.

An apparatus for determining a position between a wireless power transmitter and a wireless power receiver is provided. The apparatus comprises a ferrite structure. The apparatus further comprises a plurality of detection loops formed from metallic traces on a flexible printed circuit wrapped on or around the ferrite structure. Each of the plurality of detection loops comprises a solenoid detection loop. The ferrite structure comprises a first ferrite block and a second ferrite block disposed adjacent to the first ferrite block. A first wireless power transfer coil is wrapped on or around the first ferrite block. A second wireless power transfer coil is wrapped on or around the second ferrite block. Each detection loop of the plurality of detection loops is configured to sense an amount of magnetic flux flowing in a direction normal to a winding plane of the detection loop.

This disclosure provides apparatuses and methods for detecting foreign objects. An apparatus for detecting a presence of an object comprises at least one radar antenna attached to a wirelessly chargeable vehicle. The at least one radar antenna is configured to transmit a radar signal into a space between a wireless power receiver of the vehicle and a wireless charger as the vehicle moves in a primary direction of movement of the vehicle and receive the radar signal. The apparatus further comprises a radar processing circuit configured to determine a presence of the object in the space based on at least one characteristic of the received radar signal. The radar processing circuit is further configured to provide an indication to receive power from the wireless charger based at least in part on the determining the presence of the object.

The power transmitter includes at least one excitation circuit configured to generate a time-varying first magnetic field in response to a time-varying electric current flowing through the at least one excitation circuit. The time-varying first magnetic field has an excitation frequency. The power transmitter further includes a plurality of magnetic oscillators. Each magnetic oscillator of the plurality of magnetic oscillators has a mechanical resonant frequency substantially equal to the excitation frequency. The plurality of magnetic oscillators is configured to generate a time-varying second magnetic field in response to the first magnetic field.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for detecting foreign objects. In one aspect an apparatus for detecting a presence of an object in a magnetic field is provided. The apparatus includes a power circuit configured to generate the magnetic field and transfer power wirelessly at a level sufficient to power or charge a load via the magnetic field. The apparatus further includes a detection circuit configured to transmit signals and detect, based on a reflection of the transmitted signals, a frequency of vibration of the object caused by the magnetic field.

The apparatus further includes a coupling circuit coupled to the sense circuit. The apparatus further includes a detection circuit coupled to the sense circuit via the coupling circuit. The detection circuit is configured to detect the presence of the object in response to detecting a difference between a measured characteristic that depends on a frequency at which the resonant circuit is resonating and a corresponding characteristic that depends on the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit. The coupling circuit is configured to reduce a variation of the resonant frequency by the detection circuit in the absence of the object.

In one aspect a wireless charging system for an electric vehicle is provided. The system includes a vehicle charging pad configured to wirelessly receive power from a base charging pad spaced from the vehicle charging pad. The system further includes a detection apparatus on a surface of the vehicle. The detection apparatus is configured to detect existence of a moving object within an exclusion zone underneath the vehicle. The detection apparatus includes at least one antenna assembly configured to transmit radiation and to receive radiation reflected from material within the exclusion zone. The at least one antenna assembly has a radiation pattern for at least one of the transmitted radiation and the received radiation, the radiation pattern having a maximum gain and having a first gain along a first line perpendicular to the surface less than half of the maximum gain on a linear scale.
