A method for conveying signaling information of a communication system that uses MIMO antenna systems. To enable a relatively larger amount of information to be conveyed over the communication system and thus exploit the use of the MIMO antenna system, forward link signaling channels are provided where such channels contain swapping information that allow the communication system to retransmit traffic information using any one of the antenna elements of a MIMO system. The forward link signaling channels also contain channel assignment information that indicate which particular groups of channels are available for use by particular users of the communication system. To further accommodate for the relatively larger amount of information being conveyed over the communication system, the format of the reverse link signaling information is modified using any one or any combination of the following three mechanisms: (1) reverse signaling link information is time division multiplexed; (2) the reverse link information is modulated at relatively higher order modulation; (3) additional channels are provided for the reverse link information.

A method for controlling the flow of information on a high-speed channel between a UE and a Node B is provided. Timing of the high-speed channel is based on timing associated with a low-speed channel and a time at which a grant signal is received from the Node B. Upon receiving a grant signal, the UE adds a preselected duration of time to the timing of the low-speed channel to provide timing on the high-speed channel, where the preselected duration of time is selected to maintain substantial orthogonality between the high-speed and low-speed channels.

Accordingly, the two physical channels may be code multiplexed with additional physical channels other than the third physical channel to generate a code-multiplexed signal to be used for uplink transmission. The timing offset information may be assigned to the user from a base station, for example, in order to align the two physical channels. Accordingly, an increase in peak-to-average power ratio my be avoided and/or reduced if multiplexing the two physical channels with other physical channels for uplink transmission.

The EUDC downlink control channel can be multiplexed with the DL-DPCH by code or by both code and time. The EUDC downlink control channel may be multiplexed with a downlink dedicated physical data channel (DL-DPDCH), a downlink dedicated physical control channel (DL-DPCCH), or both. In one embodiment, the EUDC downlink control channel is multiplexed by adding a multicode channel to a current DL-DPCH and treating the EUDC downlink control channel as a dedicated channel with power control functionality.

During an interference cancellation phase, the multi-user signal processing module receives an estimation of the plurality of user signals in the transform domain and reconstructs the received signals according to the estimation.
