The assembly includes a tubular member (102) having teeth (110) for engagement with slots (112) provided on the side gear hub (48a) and carrying a first exciter rotor (116) at the opposite end (114) thereof. A second exciter rotor (118) is axially retained on the tubular member axially adjacent the first exciter rotor and is rotatable relative thereto. The second exciter rotor carries a coupling device (124/128) for engagement with threaded bores (126) provided in the drive axle ring gear/carrier assembly to rotationally couple the second exciter rotor to the ring gear and to axially retain the assembly (100) within the drive axle.

    摘要: A water-cooled magnetorheological fluid controlled combination fan drive and water pump (60) used in a cooling system. Introducing a magnetic field within a working chamber (91) between a drive ring (74) and a driven ring (84) increases the viscosity of a magnetorheological fluid by changing the state of the magnetorheological fluid from a free flowing liquid to a semi-solid state. The shear rate of the magnetorheological fluid in an activated state creates additional torque to drive an output shaft (108), and coupled fan (110), at a higher rotational speed to cool the engine coolant flowing through a closely coupled radiator. The rotation of the drive ring (74) also rotates an attached impeller assembly (112) having impellers (114) to move engine coolant through the cooling system. The magnetic field is induced by directing a flow of electrical current through an electronic coil (62) coupled within the water-cooled magnetorheological fluid controlled combination fan drive and water pump (60), and an electronic control unit coupled to the electronic coil (62) controls the amount of electrical current flowing through the coil (62). This maintains the temperature of the engine block within an acceptable temperature range at a particular engine speed.

    摘要: An electronically controlled magnetorheological fluid based fan drive assembly 60 used to increase the rotational speed of a coupled radiator cooling fan. Introducing a magnetic field within a working chamber 99 between a drive ring 74 and an output member 86 increases the viscosity of a magnetorheological fluid by changing the state of the fluid from a free flowing liquid to a semi-solid state. The shear rate of the magnetorheological fluid can be increased to create additional torque to drive the output member 86 and coupled radiator fan at a higher rotational speed to cool the engine coolant flowing through a closely coupled radiator. The magnetic field is induced by directing a flow of electrical current through an electronic coil 62 coupled within the fan drive assembly 60, and an electronic control unit coupled to the electronic coil 62 controls the amount of electrical current flowing through the coil 62. This maintains the temperature of the engine block within an acceptable temperature range at a particular engine speed.

    摘要: An improved "expanding-shoe" drum brake (100), including an immovable spider member (38) to which brake shoes (18, 19) are pivotally mounted to move into engagement with a rotating annular brake drum (10). As is common, the shoes move in response to motion of a brake-actuating rotatable S cam (12), which is located between first adjacent ends of the brake shoes. The cam applies force to two cam followers (14, 15), which are rollers rotatably fixed to respective brake shoes. At the second end of each brake shoe an anchor pin (30, 31) is fixedly mounted to with webs of the respective brake shoe, as by welding (57A, 57B). In the embodiment described, a corresponding receptacle (43, 45) in the immovable spider has a semicircular surface (49, 51) at its bottom to serve as a bearing. The bearing surface engages the anchor pin, for rotation of the shoe. The brake shoe is resistant to twisting and misalignment.

    摘要: A viscous fan clutch is typically employed in a fan drive mechanism within a truck or automobile. A shaft, driven by the engine, rotates a clutch member within the fan drive. The clutch member is arranged for fluid engagement with a body member for the transmission of torque thereto when fluid is disposed in an operating chamber defined by complimentary shear surfaces in the clutch and body members. During relative rotation between the two members, fluid is pumped through a return passage to a valve coaxially disposed with the driven shaft which selectively directs a flow of viscous fluid alternately to a storage chamber or directly back into the operating chamber. The valve is biased into a first position in which the fluid is directed into a fluid storage chamber and is actuated into the second position by means of a coaxially disposed solenoid acting upon ferrous metal members of the valve. When the valve is in the second position, a port is opened for fluid communication between the fluid storage chamber and the operating chamber.
