Abstract:
A method for controlling a vehicle system includes receiving, at a control system, a request to open an ambient air inlet valve of a vehicle component, wherein the ambient air inlet valve is operable to move from a closed position to an open position in response to an open signal that is transmitted to the ambient air inlet valve from the control system. The method also includes determining whether a towing condition is present, determining whether at least one submergence risk criterion is present, and transmitting the open signal to the ambient air inlet valve, in response to the request to open the ambient air inlet valve, if the towing condition is not present or the at least one submergence risk criterion is not present.
Abstract:
To test whether a trailer is coupled to a tractor when the tractor ignition switch is off, a test switch in the trailer connects a high-impedance power source in a trailer to a line carrying energy from the tractor ignition switch to the trailer's electrical load, and measures the voltage at the line. A high voltage indicates a connection only to the electrical load in the trailer and thus a decouple. A low voltage indicates a measurement of the electrical loads in both trailer and tractor and hence a coupling.
Abstract:
A towable wheeled vehicle releasably attachable to a towing vehicle at two horizontally spaced apart points provides a frame supporting a deck, a wheel carriage having a leaf spring suspension and a tubular steering axle with rotatable and turnable wheels at each end, and an electrically powered pneumatic system. Airbags communicating between the steering axle and the frame inflate and deflate to axially rotate the steering axle in axle sleeves carried by the leaf spring suspension reversing the caster and camber of the wheels responsive to activation of the towing vehicle's back up lights.
Abstract:
An object positioning device and method for positioning an object in a desired position relative to another object. In one aspect, the invention provides a device for aligning hitching components used in coupling a trailer to a towing vehicle. The invention also provides an apparatus for positioning an object upheld by a-base over a supporting surface, comprising a plurality of independently adjustable plumb devices associated with the base. This object positioning apparatus is beneficial in adjusting the verticality of a target supported over the coupling on a trailer used in the trailer hitch alignment device of the present invention.
Abstract:
A vehicle-in-motion warning apparatus having one or more warning device and a light source in a housing. The warning device may be an audible, visual, or objecting-sensing device, and is mounted behind a grill which is integrally formed with the housing face. The light source is mounted in front of the housing face and covered with a removeable transparent cover. The housing may be either formed to fit a vehicle recess or alternatively formed to fit into a trailer hitch receiver. The associated wiring harness is terminated with a standard connector which allows the apparatus to be plugged into the existing vehicle wiring harness without modification, or a pigtail for splicing into the wiring harness.
Abstract:
An electronic system that includes a trailer sensor, a lock sensor and a control circuit determine whether a trailer hitch assembly is properly coupled to a trailer. The trailer sensor senses the position of the trailer relative to the trailer hitch assembly and the lock sensor senses the position of the locking mechanism. The control circuit is coupled to the trailer sensor and the lock sensor and masks an output of the lock sensor for a first predetermined stabilization period after the control circuit initially determines that the trailer hitch assembly is properly coupled to the trailer.
Abstract:
A back-up direction guide for a pup trailer dolly having a frame sprung from a wheel equipped axle and connected to the rearward end of a truck-trailer by an A-frame tongue portion is formed by a rigid plate clamped in overlying relation to the forward end portion of the pup trailer dolly frame. Load binders are pivotally connected with the respective ends of the plate and tensioned flexible members connected with the respective load binder and the respective outer lower limit of the rearward end portion of the truck-trailer guide the pup trailer dolly in a selected direction during rearward backing movement of the truck-trailer.
Abstract:
An automatic self-steering trailer axle wherein the wheel spindles are pivotally mounted upon the steering knuckle plate and may be pivoted in front of or behind the kingpin by means of a ratchet wheel which is engaged or disengaged by changing the direction of movement of the axle. The invention also includes a control linkage assembly which may be connected to the trailer axle and also connected to the trailer hitch or towing vehicle steering so that a change in direction of the towing vehicle while it is being operated in a rearward direction is transmitted directly to the control linkage.
Abstract:
An anti-jackknife system for use while towing a trailer with a tractor. The tractor and trailer are coupled to each other by a fifth-wheel assembly in known manner. The fifth-wheel assembly includes a wheel plate carried by the tractor and a cooperating pin carried by the trailer, the pin being rotatable within the wheel plate when the tractor and trailer are coupled to each other. First and second abutments are carried by the trailer on opposing sides of the pin. The abutments move in paths around the pin on a change in orientation between the tractor and trailer, as during turning, for example. Fluid-actuated cylinders are carried by the tractor on opposing sides of the wheel plate with each cylinder providing a stop movable between a first position out of the abutment path. The stops are normally in the second position. A jackknife condition is detected to actuate at least one of the fluid-actuated cylinders to move its associated stop into the first position. In a preferred embodiment, a back-up state of the tractor disables movement to the fluid-actuated cylinders while a steering motion selectively disables one of the cylinders.
Abstract:
A trailer hitch structure for coupling a double caster-type wheel trailer to a tow vehicle having a conventional hitch bar fixed thereto and projecting rearwardly thereof. There is provided a rigid vehicle connector having a front portion fixedly connectable to the hitch bar. The front portion connects to a transversely extending rear portion which extends generally parallel to the vehicle bumper. This rear portion mounts adjustable bumper elements adjacent the opposite ends thereof, which bumper elements adjust for snug engagement with the vehicle bumper. A crossbar is positioned adjacent but slightly rearwardly from the rear portion and is coupled thereto through a swivel structure which defines a horizontal roll axis which extends in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The crossbar mounts a pair of hitch balls adjacent the opposite ends thereof. The trailer has a tongue structure provided with a pair of sidewardly spaced couplers for releasable engagement with the hitch balls.
