Abstract:
An adaptive receiver includes an adaptive decoder for providing decoded output data from a video signal encoded for satellite, terrestrial or cable transmission. The apparatus includes an adaptive decoder for providing a first decoded output as a function of a code rate selected from a plurality of code rates. The apparatus also includes an adaptive deinterleaver for deinterleaving the first decoded output in accordance with a deinterleaving function selected from a plurality of deinterleaving functions. In addition, the apparatus includes an output signal processor for processing the deinterleaved output data to provide the decoded output data. The demodulator may also incorporate a an adaptive error decoder for detecting and correcting errors in the deinterleaved output. In addition, a signal quality detector may provide an estimate of the error in the decoded output data. The apparatus is automatically configured to be compatible with the encoded video signal format in response to the error estimate.

Abstract:
Fault currents in the phases of a three-phase supply are detected by transformers 28 in respective phase links 14 and are counted by associated circuits 24 when any one of the circuits 24 reaches a predetermined count level, or when there is a fault condition, a low VA trip coil 42 is energized so as to release latches which hold the phase links 14 in their operative positions and thereby cause all three links 14 to drop out together.
Abstract:
Electrical switchgear comprises a first contact set composed of a first contact which is pivotable about a pivot axis and a second contact, the contacts being relatively movable between a closed position wherein a load current can be passed therethrough and an open position. An arc is formed between the first contact and an arcing electrode during movement of the contacts from their closed to their open position, whereupon current flows through a field coil connected in series with the electrode to produce a magnetic field which causes the arc to rotate and become extinguished. The pivot axis of the first contact extends transversely to a major axis of the field coil such that, during opening of the contacts, an end portion of the first contact moves transversely to and inwardly of said major axis. A second contact set is operable to earth the first contact set when its contacts are in their open position. Both the first and second contact sets are disposed in a common housing which contains an electrically insulating fluid.
Abstract:
A satellite transmission system receiver, for receiving a composite signal including a data component and a synchronization (sync) component is disclosed. The receiver includes a signal processor, responsive to the received data component, and requiring a periodic sync signal in synchronism, with the sync component. A sync signal generator periodically produces the sync signal. A sync component detector, responsive to the sync component, synchronizes the sync signal generator to the received sync component. The satellite transmission system receiver further includes a sync word predictor, responsive to the received data signal, for predicting the locations of sync words in the received data signal and a sync word inserter, coupled to the sync word predictor, for substituting a word having the value of the sync word into the received data signal at a predicted location.
Abstract:
A television signal receiving system includes a deinterleaving network (18) containing first and second deinterleaving functions associated with respective memory address controllers (20, 25). One or the other of the deinterleaving functions is selected for use by a multiplexer (30) in response to a Deinterleaver Select control signal. Deinterleaving is accomplished by controlling the read/write addressing of a memory (35) by the selected deinterleaving function.
Abstract:
A branch metric computer for the Viterbi decoder of a convolutional decoder primarily intended for use in a multi-channel compressed-digital television receiver capable of receiving FEC data transmitted over satellite, terrestrial and transmission channels. The branch metric computer employs a RAM, having an effective depth of 2.sup.x storage locations and an effective storage-location width of 16 m, which is preloaded with two selectively programmed I and two selectively programmed Q lookup tables, wherein each table entry is made up of four m-bit values,. The RAM is designed to operate with either QPSK punctured-coded I and Q signal inputs or any one of a plurality of different PAM or QAM higher alphabet or an 8-PSK pragmatic trellis-coded 2.sup.x -bit I and 2.sup.x -bit Q signal inputs to the convolutional decoder that are forwarded as signal inputs to the RAM for controlling the particular I and Q lookup-table entries read out from the RAM. The branch metric computer further comprises (1) a group of eight Manhattan-distance metric computing summers organized into first and second sets of four summers for adding certain combinations of the four m-bit I and Q lookup-table entries read out from the RAM and (2) a network including four comparators with each of them forwarding to the Viterbi decoder the lesser sum output from corresponding ones of the summers of the first and second sets.
Abstract:
A gas-blast type interrupter comprises first and second electrodes relatively movable between a closed position in which they are in mutual electrical engagement and an open position in which they are mutually separated, movement of the electrodes towards their open position causing an arc to be drawn therebetween. A tubular housing encloses the first electrode and has therein a first insulating orifice through which the second electrode substantially sealingly passes when the electrodes are in their closed position. A guide surrounds the tubular member and has therein a second insulating orifice through which the second electrode also substantially sealingly passes when the electrodes are in their closed position, the first and second orifices being co-axial and of essentially the same size. The tubular housing and the guide define therebetween an annular chamber to which pressurized gas is supplied upon movement of the electrodes towards their open position, so that when the second electrode passes out of the first insulating orifice pressurized gas is permitted to flow therethrough into the interior of the tubular member in a direction essentially along said arc, and when the second electrode subsequently passes out of the second insulating orifice the pressurized gas is permitted to flow therethrough from the annular chamber in the opposite direction to the gas flowing through the first orifice.
Abstract:
A cutterhead for a peripheral milling machine including a cutterhead body including a generally cylindrical portion and a plurality of circumferential, spaced and offset blade unit mounting cavities extending into the cutterhead body from the periphery of the cylindrical portion for receiving a blade unit. The cutterhead further includes a plurality of blade units each having at least one cutting edge and means for removably securing each of the removable blade units in the corresponding blade unit mounting cavity. The cutting edge of each of the blade units is disposed to align with the cutting edge of each of the other blade units in adjacent mounting cavities to form a substantially helical, stepped blade row when the blade units are secured to the cutterhead body.
Abstract:
A loudspeaker cone body made of paper may include a chemically-bound nanomaterial, such as a carbon nanotube. The carbon nanotube may be chemically bound to a functionalizing agent having a chemical group chemically bound to one or more papermaking additives, such as a sizing agent or a wet strength agent, a dry strength agent, a resin or cellulose-containing papermaking stock material typically present in a paper loudspeaker cone body, such as pulp. Acoustic-related loudspeaker performance characteristics such as stiffness to weight ratio and an acoustic damping of the loudspeaker cone body may be altered by incorporation of the nanomaterials chemically bound to the loudspeaker cone body.
