Abstract: A sequence of images is encoded in a bitstream as a series of picture units PU-01˜03. Each picture unit corresponds to one encoded image and includes one or more network abstraction layer (NAL) units NAL-01˜23. The NAL units may be video coding layer (VCL) NAL units which each contain encoded image data or adaptation parameter set NAL units which each contain an adaptation parameter set (APS) having parameters for performing one or more types of processing operation on the image data contained in one or more VCL NAL units. The APS NAL units may be prefix APS NAL units P-APS or suffix APS NAL units S-APS. An additional constraint is applied to the bitstream prohibiting inclusion of a prefix APS NAL unit after the first NAL unit of the picture unit concerned. This can avoid more than one APS applying to slices belonging to the same picture unit.

Abstract: A method of encoding a motion vector predictor index, in particular a Merge index, comprises generating a list of motion vector predictor candidates, in particular merge candidates. The list includes an ATMVP candidate. One of the motion vector predictor candidates in the list is selected. A motion vector predictor index for the selected motion vector predictor candidate is generated using CABAC coding. One or more bits of the motion vector predictor index are bypass CABAC coded. For example, only the first bit of the motion vector predictor index is CABAC coded using a single context.

Abstract: A method of decoding video data from a bitstream, the bitstream comprising video data corresponding to one or more slices. The bitstream comprises a picture header comprising syntax elements to be used when decoding one or more slices, and a slice header comprising syntax elements to be used when decoding a slice. In the picture header at least one syntax element indicating whether a decoding tool may be used in the picture. When the decoding tool is used in the picture, at least one APS ID related syntax element is parsed for the decoding tool in the picture header. The decoding also comprises parsing, in a slice header, at least one syntax element indicating whether the decoding tool is to be used or not for that slice prior to syntax elements relating to other decoding tools. A bitstream is decoded using said syntax elements.

Abstract: A set of spatial motion information predictors to be encoded is generated from among spatial motion information predictors respectively associated with predetermined image portions adjacent to an image portion to be decoded, one of which is situated left of the image portion to be decoded. At least one condition is used to determine that a spatial motion information predictor is not includable in the set. At least one condition is a condition to exclude from the generated set of spatial motion information predictors a spatial motion information predictor that is a duplicate of another spatial motion information predictor. A temporal motion information predictor is not subjected to the duplicate exclusion condition used for the spatial motion information predictors and may be a duplicate of a spatial motion information predictor in the generated set. A motion information predictor is selected from among (i) the generated set of motion information predictors, (ii) the temporal motion information predictor, and (iii) a zero motion information predictor as a replacement for a non-includable spatial motion information predictor.

Abstract: The present invention is related to video coding and decoding, in particular HEVC RExt that define a palette coding mode dedicated to the coding of screen contents. In improved palette coding modes according to the invention, when building a palette, each time a new pixel is added to the class a palette entry defines, the palette entry is modified to take the means value of the pixels belonging to such class. In other improved palette coding modes, a built palette is post-processed to substitute a palette entry with a close entry of a palette predictor PRED. In yet other embodiments, palette coding modes having different threshold values to drive the building of their respective palettes are successively tested to use the best one in terms of rate-distortion criterion.
