A polymerizable composition comprises a mixture of(A) a substance having at least one allyl- or methallyl-substituted bicyclo[2.2.1]-hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid imide residue, and(B) a substance having at least one polymerizable residue of formulaCH.sub.2 =C(R.sup.1)COO-- I where R.sup.1 denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.Typically, (A) is bis[4-(allylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboximidophenyl)]methane and (B) is an acrylate or methacrylate of a polyhydric alcohol. The compositions can be photopolymerized or heat-cured. They are suitable for use in prepreg manufacture and in image formation.

Polyglycidyl ethers which are obtainable by reacting acetophenone with 0.7 to 1.4 mol of formaldehyde per mol of acetophenone, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and in the temperature range from 50.degree. to 100.degree. Crosslinked polymers which can be obtained by heating imides of the formula I ##STR1## in which E is allyl or methallyl, G is hydrogen or methyl, R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, benzyl, alkylene or arylene and n is 1 or 2, in the presence of a catalyst suitable for cationic polymerization. The use of the catalyst makes it possible to carry out curing at relatively low temperatures and within short reaction times. The polymers can be used, in particular, for the preparation of heat-resistant composite materials and they can also be used as electrical insulating materials and whirl-sintered powder paints.

A coating composition for paper is provided, which composition consists of an aqueous preparation containing at least a polymeric binder, an inorganic pigment, and a water-insoluble urea-formaldehyde polycondensation product from 1 mole of urea and 1.3 to 2 moles, of formaldehyde, which product is in a highly dispersed form and has a mean particle diameter of 3 to 6 microns, and a specific BET surface urea of 3 to 12 m.sup.2 /g.Papers coated with these compositions exhibit, in addition to an enhanced degree of whiteness and equally good gloss and improved opacity and smoothness, above all better printability.

According to the invention, polyaddition products containing imide groups are manufactured by reacting certain polyimides (preferably maleimides) with polyhydric alcohols in the presence of basic compounds. The preferred embodiment (E) relates to the use of catalysts as basic compounds. In particular, amines and alkali metal compounds can be used. A further embodiment (F) relates to the use of primary polyamines as basic compounds. In the latter case, the polyamine participates in the polyaddition mechanism, that is to say the molecules are incorporated into the polyaddition products. In this latter case, catalysts can also be used additionally.
