This is accomplished by forming the cap from single piece of expanded metal to create a substantially square or rectangular cage where each side of the cage has an integral flange that is bent substantially perpendicular to its respective side. The substantially square or rectangular cage is stretched to form a shaped trapezoidal cage, with a top portion of each side of the cage having a longer span that a bottom of portion of each side.

A method of operating a scanning probe microscope includes using a probe having a cantilever, and oscillating the probe at a torsional resonance frequency thereof. In addition, the method includes substantially increasing torsional drive efficiency with dual actuators disposed on the probe or the probe base. First and second actuators may be driven by corresponding first and second drive signals, the first and second drive signals being about 180° out of phase. The maximizing step includes altering at least one of the amplitudes of the first and second drive signals to maximize torsional oscillation. Torsional and flexural oscillation of the cantilever probe can be excited concurrently, sequentially or independently by adjusting the phase of the corresponding drive signals. A pair of cantilever components can be used to form a nanotweezer by rotating the respective arms having corresponding tip portions at the distal ends.

A method of operating a probe-based instrument comprises placing a probe of the probe-based instrument in an operative state in which the probe interacts with a heated sample, measuring a parameter of probe operation indicative of a characteristic of the heated sample, and during the measuring step, maintaining interaction between the probe and the heated sample that is substantially free of influences caused by condensation on the probe. The maintaining step includes heating the probe to a temperature at which the measured parameter of probe operation is substantially free of influences caused by condensation on the probe. Heating the probe reduces or eliminates the formation of condensation on the probe from water or materials that have evaporated from the heated sample. The invention is especially useful in connection with atomic force microscopes and other probe-based instruments.

Vertical enterprise systems and methods for integrating applications from one or more enterprises into a single interface for presentation to a user are disclosed. A vertical enterprise system in accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention may include one or more client enterprises, one or more partner enterprises, and an active integration enterprise in communication with the one or more client and partner enterprises. The active integration enterprise may include a central integration platform operating on an application integration network adapted to host a number of core components including a portal system, a collaboration system, a database system, and/or a business system. In certain embodiments, the active integration enterprise can be configured to host a number of user-specific applications that provide specific functionality for a particular client. In use, the active integration enterprise can be configured to permit the one or more client and/or partner enterprises to be utilized in a distributed fashion. A single sign-on interface of the portal system can provide the user with application data from multiple enterprises as a single view.
