Abstract:
Polyvinyl alcohol compositions in the form of an aqueous solution are disclosed, where the aqueous polyvinyl alcohol compositions include: (i) polyvinyl alcohol; (ii) at least one polyaldehyde having at least 3 carbon atoms and being masked completely as a water-soluble hydrogen sulfite adduct; and (ii) at least one compound which is acidic in water. The aqueous polyvinyl alcohol compositions are suitable as adhesives and for use in cast films.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an aqueous coating medium which contains, as binder vehicles in the form of aqueous polymer dispersions,A) 50 to 90% by weight of one or more thermoplastic copolymers of at least one C2-C4 olefin and at least one vinyl ester of a C2-C11 monocarboxylic acid, wherein the olefin(s) and vinyl ester(s) are present in a ratio by weight of 10:90 to 40:60 and together make up at least 80% by weight of the copolymer,B) 10 to 50% by weight of one or more thermoplastic (meth)acrylic copolymers which are free from comonomers containing nitrile and amide groups, and at least 50% by weight of which consists of (meth)acrylic acid esters of C1-C18 alcohols, andC) 0 to 30% by weight of one or more copolymers which are different from A) and B),wherein the percentages by weight are given with respect to the resin solids in each case and add up to 100% by weight.
Abstract:
A plastic film is reinforced with a fiber material which exhibits on at least one of its two surfaces an impregnation or covering, which includes a plastic consisting essentially of a copolymer of at least two different monomeric units selected from the group consisting of a vinyl ester, a maleic ester, a fumaric ester, an acrylic ester, a methacrylic ester, a linear alpha-olefin of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms and styrene. The film is suitable for producing tubes with a longitudinal seam. The tubes are used in particular as artificial sausage casings.
Abstract:
A resin-like product having a degree of hydrolysis of 50 to 70 mole percent is obtained by selective alcoholysis of a vinyl ester copolymer, if desired in the form of a mixture with a vinyl ester homopolymer. The starting material employed is preferably a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer. The resin is suitable for use as a hot-melt adhesive which forms coherent films capable of being activated by water or water vapor.
Abstract:
The water content of a material, which tends to either absorb water or to release water, is changed with the aid of a film, which at least partially separates the material from the adjacent space and is impermeable to liquid water but permeable to gaseous water. Polyvinyl alcohol with a particular degree of polymerization and degree of hydrolysis is used as the film material. The film can be mechanically or chemically after-treated. The moistening or de-moistening of the material, which is solid, liquid or gaseous, is effected, utilizing a water vapor pressure gradient, under very mild conditions.

Abstract:
Thermoplastic composition having high cohesion and a reduced tendency to flow, based on a copolymer of ethylenically unsaturated monomers obtained by conventional methods in the presence of polymerization initiators and a chelating agent based on(A) a copolymer consisting of an alkyl ester of an .alpha., .beta.-ethylenically unsaturated mono- and/or dicarboxylic acid with 1 to 12 carbon atoms in the alcohol group, an amide of such an acid, unsubstituted at the nitrogen atom, one of these acids themselves and optionally another copolymerizable monomeric compound,(B) a metal-containing cross-linking agent, the metal atom being an element of the second, third or fourth group of the Periodic Table, and optionally(C) other additives acting as extenders and other conventional additives, and the preparation thereof by treating the copolymer (A) together with the cross-linking component (B) and possibly the other additives (C) in a mixing apparatus at 100.degree. to 150.degree. C., during which cross-linking of the copolymer occurs. The thermoplastic compositions may be used as thermoplastic and hot-melt adhesives, laminating adhesives, sealable coatings, adhesive or barrier layers.
