Abstract:
Articles are disclosed wherein a color-imparting non-hiding coating layer is deposited on a surface thereof. The coating layer is deposited from a protective coating composition comprising color-imparting particles having a maximum haze of about 10% and a film-forming resin. Methods of using the coatings, and the substrates coated therewith, are also disclosed.

Abstract:
A method of applying a multi-component coating of a desired composition over a substrate includes providing a coating device in flow communication with a first coating component having a first rheological profile and at least one second coating component having a second rheological profile. The method further includes defining a desired ratio of the first and at least one second coating components to provide a coating of a desired composition, and selecting the rheological profiles of the first and at least one second coating components such that the coating components are supplied at a desired ratio.
Abstract:
Curable compositions containing novel polysiloxanes having various reactive functional groups are disclosed. The curable compositions are useful as both ambient-cured and thermally-cured coating compositions which provide such properties as excellent appearance, mar resistance, acid etch resistance, adhesion, pot life, improved tack time, mar resistance and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:
A coating composition is disclosed that comprises (a) a copolymer comprising alternating units of a vinyl monomer and an unsaturated diester monomer in which at least one of the esterifying groups includes a hydroxyl group, and (b) a hydroxy group-reactive curing agent. The diester monomer is formed by first opening an anhydride with an alcohol to form a monoester, and then alkoxylating the remaining acid group on the monoester with an epoxy compound to form a second ester group having hydroxyl functionality.
Abstract:
A copolymer with an acid value less than one contains alternating units of a vinyl monomer and a diester of a dicarboxylic acid wherein at least one of the esterifying groups contains a polyether group. The copolymer is particularly useful in preparing pigment dispersions for coating compositions. Such compositions exhibit properties including reduced pigment settling and improved metallic flake orientation, flow and leveling.
Abstract:
An ungelled reaction product is prepared from a carboxylic acid group containing polymeric material and an azetidinol containing material having one azetidinol moiety per molecule. The ungelled reaction product is particularly useful as a grind vehicle for pigment grind compositions.
Abstract:
Ambient temperature curing compositions comprising a hydroxyl component and an anhydride component are disclosed. Cure is accelerated by the presence of an onium compound. The compositions are useful in the formulation and application of coatings.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a non-yellowing coating composition comprising: a hydroxy component having at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule, and an anhydride component having at least two carboxylic acid anhydride groups per molecule. The anhydride component is derived from a mixture of monomers comprising greater than or equal to 11 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride, the balance of the mixture comprised of at least one vinyl comonomer. The molar ratio of the vinyl comonomer to the carboxylic acid anhydride in the mixture should be at least 1.0:1.0 and the ratio should be sufficient to provide a color standard number of less than 150. Typically, the coating composition is in the form of a two-package composition. Also disclosed is a method of coating comprising: (I) coating a substrate with one or more applications of a pigmented basecoating composition to form a basecoat, and (II) coating the basecoat with one or more applications of a transparent topcoating composition to form a transparent topcoat, in which the basecoating composition and/or the topcoating composition comprises the aforesaid non-yellowing coating composition.
