A hydraulic brake system with anti-lock control comprises a main cylinder connected to a reservoir, wheel brakes connected to the main cylinder by way of brake lines, and a recirculating pump, a suction side of which is connected to the wheel brakes by way of a first suction line. By way of a second suction line, the pump is connected to a pressure source. To control the pressure medium supply from a precharging device or other pressure source to the suction side of the recirculating pump as a function of the pressure in the second suction line, a hydraulically actuated valve is used. The inlet of the valve is connected to the precharging device via the pressure source, the outlet of the valve is connected to the suction side of the recirculating pump. The output pressure of the valve acts in a valve closing direction such that the valve closes once a pressure on the suction side of the recirculating pump exceeds a certain value. Thus, pressure medium supply is controlled as a function of the pressure on the suction side of the recirculating pump rather than the pressure at the valve inlet, to thereby limit the pressure on the suction side and to consequently subject the pump to less wear.

The change-over valve is arranged in the suction line between a pump and a master brake cylinder and shuts off the connection during each pedal-operated braking operation and opens it during each traction slip control operation. To avoid negative effects on the brake pedal feeling, restrictors are provided which prolong the closing time of the switch-over valve so that the fluid volume for switching is received gradually and continuously. The switching position is determined by a diaphragm, whose effective surface depends on its flexure to afford a non-stick-slip operation.

An anti-lock hydraulic brake system is described wherein a throttle valve has a restrictive flow condition which becomes effective in the brake line in the event of brake slip control. Pumps for reapply pressure deliver fluid to the wheel brake via this restriction and regulating the pressure in the wheel brake is performed by control of an outlet valve. The throttle valve is operated hydraulically by various arrangements including the application of pump pressure, or by wheel brake pressure applied upon opening of the outlet valve at the start of an anti-lock control cycle.

A hydraulic anti-locking brake unit is presented in which the brake line is shut off by an isolating valve (20) during a control action. For the reduction of the pressure, the outlet valve (7) is opened, so that the pump (14) delivers hydraulic fluid out of the wheel brake into the high-pressure accumulator (19). For a renewed pressure build up, the inlet valve (6) is opened, so that hydraulic fluid flow is directed out of the high-pressure accumulator (19) back to the wheel brake. In order to be able to utilize a high-pressure accumulator having a low receiving capacity, various valving arrangements are disclosed to direct excess flow from the pump either to the master cylinder or a low pressure accumulator.
