The method relates to an X-ray apparatus, which by the rotary scanning with the aid of a fan-shaped radiation beam provides measuring data about the radiation attenuation in the layer of a body, from which subsequently the absorption distribution of the layer being examined is calculated. In such an apparatus it is important that the center of rotation is accurately known. If this center is not exactly known, this leads to blurring in the reconstructed image. If scanning is not performed over a full revolution, this moreover gives rise to streaking artefacts. The method proposed automatically yields the center of rotation from the measuring data, so that during the subsequent reconstruction allowance can be made for the center of rotation.

In computerized tomographic scanning systems it is desirable to reduce the scanning time required. Therefore, it is desirable that the radiation source/radiation detector system not be stopped and subsequently accelerated again for each absorption measurement. The present system continuously rotates and the source is continuously turned on, the output signal of each radiation detector being applied via a low-pass filter to a sample-and-hold circuit having a sampling frequency which is about twice as high as the limit frequency of the low-pass filter. Better accuracy is obtained than with known scanners having discontinuous movement or a flashing radiation source.

The device includes an image forming device for determining measurement signals representing the periodic structures, and a further electronic device. This electronic device forms the frequency spectrum from neighboring measurement values in the direction of the periodic body structures, suppresses the fundamental and higher harmonics (G,B.sub.1,B.sub.3) of the periodic structures in the relevant spectrum, and retransforms the spectrums thus modified for application to an image evaluation device.
