A fiber optical measuring device for measuring a magnetic or electric field comprises an optical modulator influenced by the field. The optical properties of the modulator are dependent on the magnetic or electric field acting on the modulator. The optical property which is made use of is the field dependence of at least one absorption edge of the radiation absorption spectrum of the modulator material. Optical fibers may be used for feeding light into the modulator and for leading away light that has passed through the modulator.

Novel magnetically orientable retroreflectorization particles permit application of highly oriented retroreflective coatings. The retroreflectorization particles individually comprise at least one transparent microsphere, specular reflective means in optical connection with a first portion of said microsphere so as to provide retroreflection of light incident on the opposed portion of the microsphere, and a magnetic layer underlying said specular reflective means and having a magnetic axis parallel to the optical axis on which said first and opposed portions of the microsphere are aligned. When the particles are applied to a substrate in the presence of a magnetic field having flux lines of appropriate polarity perpendicular to the substrate, the particles tend to become aligned in a common direction that retroreflects light incident on the coating.

A device adapted to provide a visual display under the influence of an exterior magnetic field which comprises a plurality of rotatable, multi-colored, non-magnetically interactive, permanently magnetized micromagnets disposed in a cavity within a body having a transparent surface and a plurality of relatively small compartments within the cavity. The device is illustrated by a sheet containing such micromagnets between the thin cavity of the front and rear surfaces of the sheet where the relatively even dispersion of the micromagnets in the sheet is maintained by such compartments whose barriers minimize displacement so that physical pressure exerted on the sheet, such as by a twist or flex, does not substantially alter the even dispersion of the micromagnets.In an embodiment, the visual display device is a sheet, preferably a substantially transparent or invisible polymer sheet, containing relatively small compartments therein which have cellular and/or structural barriers which prevent substantial displacement therefrom by holding in such compartments rotatable micromagnets which are surrounded with a suspension or carrier fluid which allows such rotation. An electrically alterable apparatus and method of operation thereof that permits the optical processing of an image is disclosed. The apparatus includes an array of optical cells comprised of a plurality of XY stripline arrays and a stripedomain film element. The stripe-domain wall separation and wall orientation at each point in the film element are selectively controllable for generating in the optical cell array an electrically alterable hologram. Domain wall configurations to perform various optical processing tasks are disclosed.

A combination digital display and memory element comprising a thin film of magnetic material having a uniaxial anisotropy, a matrix of crossed conductors, and a thin film of rotatable anistropic magnetic material having a dense banded domain structure. A coloidal suspension of ferromagnetic particles covered with a transparent chamber is placed over the magnetic material. Light directed at the coloidal suspension will be reflected to produce an image of the domain structure contained in the magnetic films. The domains are selectively produced by generating currents on the crossed conductors.
