    Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide improved methods and apparatus suitable for use with hearing devices. A vapor deposition process can be used to make a retention structure having a shape profile corresponding to a tissue surface, such as a retention structure having a shape profile corresponding to one or more of an eardrum, the eardrum annulus, or a skin of the ear canal. The retention structure can be resilient and may comprise an anatomically accurate shape profile corresponding to a portion of the ear, such that the resilient retention structure provides mechanical stability for an output transducer assembly placed in the ear for an extended time. The output transducer may couple to the eardrum with direct mechanical coupling or acoustic coupling when retained in the ear canal with the retention structure.

    Abstract: A medical apparatus for a patient includes an external system configured to transmit one or more transmission signals, each transmission signal having at least power or data. An implantable system is configured to receive the one or more transmission signals from the external system, and the external system includes a first external device with at least one external antenna configured to transmit a first transmission signal to the implantable system. The first transmission signal includes at least power or data, and an external transmitter is configured to drive the at least one external antenna. An external power supply is configured to provide power to at least the external transmitter, and an external controller is configured to control the external transmitter. A first implantable device includes at least one implantable antenna configured to receive the first transmission signal from the first external device. An implantable receiver is configured to receive the first transmission signal from the at least one implantable antenna. At least one implantable functional element is configured to interface with the patient. An implantable controller is configured to control the at least one implantable functional element. The medical apparatus is configured to neuromodulate tissue and/or record patient information.

    Abstract: A device to transmit an audio signal to a user comprises a transducer and a support. The support is configured for placement on the eardrum to drive the eardrum. The transducer is coupled to the support at a first location to decrease occlusion and a second location to drive the eardrum. The transducer may comprise one or more of an electromagnetic balanced armature transducer, a piezoelectric transducer, a magnetostrictive transducer, a photostrictive transducer, or a coil and magnet. The device may find use with open canal hearing aids.

    Abstract: A wound dressing for use with a closure device is disclosed. The first and second base panels of the closure device are positioned on opposite lateral sides of a wound or incision. The base panels are coupled together to maintain wound or incision closure. A release liner is removed from a bottom surface of the wound dressing. The wound dressing is positioned over the closure device and the wound or incision. Exudate is absorbed by an absorbent material of the wound dressing through a porous strip of the wound dressing. The wound dressing is slightly larger than the closure device so that its perimeter area is adhered to the skin area around the closure device. Alternatively or in combination, the wound dressing is lightly adhered to the closure device and wound or incision area so that it can be removed without harming the underlying device and tissues.

    Abstract: An ablation catheter comprises an elongate catheter body and a branch electrode element. The elongate catheter body has a central axis, a distal end, and a proximal end. The base end is secured to the elongate catheter body at a location spaced proximally of the distal end and an effector on the working end. The branch electrode element is configured to evert when the distal end of the elongate catheter body is in a pulmonary vein ostium or os so that the effector can be selectively engaged against locations surrounding the pulmonary vein os which differ in radial direction and distance.     Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide shaped masses comprising one or more drugs such as proteins or polypeptides and methods for forming such shaped masses. One embodiment provides a shaped mass comprising a drug such as a protein or polypeptide having a biological activity in the body of a mammal. The shaped mass is formed by compression of a precursor material comprising the drug wherein an amount of biologically active drug in the mass is a preserved above a minimum level. Drugs which may be incorporated into the shaped mass may include one or more glucose regulating proteins such as insulin, incretins; and immunoglobulins such as TNF-inhibiting antibodies or interleukin neutralizing antibodies. Embodiments of the shaped mass may be incorporated into a tissue penetrating member which is inserted into the intestinal wall allowing for the oral delivery of proteins and peptides which would otherwise be degraded in the intestinal tract.
