Abstract: An optical device includes an optical waveguide provided on a principal surface of a substrate. The optical waveguide includes a core and a cladding provided around the core. The cladding is configured by a substance having a refractive index smaller than 71.4% of the refractive index of the core. The core has constituent atoms substantially forming a diamond lattice structure. The optical waveguide has a light input/output part through which a light beam is input and/or output. The light input/output part decreases stepwise in thickness towards an output end while tapering down in its width. The core is provided in the light input/output part to have a (111) plane or an equivalent plane to the (111) plane exposed on a face of a riser of the stepwise thickness of the light input/output part.

Abstract: Methods and systems for integrated multi-port waveguide photodetectors are disclosed and may include an optical receiver on a chip, where the optical receiver comprises a multi-port waveguide photodetector having three or more input ports. The optical receiver may be operable to receive optical signals via one or more grating couplers, couple optical signals to the photodetector via optical waveguides in the chip, and generate an output electrical signal based on the coupled optical signals using the photodetector. The photodetector may include four ports coupled to two PSGCs. The optical signals may be coupled to the photodetector via S-bends and/or tapers at ends of the optical waveguides. A width of the photodetector on sides that are coupled to the optical waveguides may be wider than a width of the optical waveguides coupled to the sides. Optical signals may be mixed with local oscillator signals using the multi-port waveguide photodetector.

Abstract: A right-angle bending waveguide includes a circular-hole-type square-lattice photonic crystal (PhC) and a single compensation scattering rod having a low refractive index. The right-angle bending waveguide is a PhC formed from first dielectric rods having a low refractive index arranged in a background dielectric having a low refractive index according to a square lattice. In the PhC, one row and one column of the first dielectric rods having a high refractive index are removed to form the right-angle bending waveguide. A second dielectric rod having a high refractive index is arranged at a corner of the right-angle bending waveguide. The second dielectric rod is the compensation scattering rod or an air hole. The first dielectric rods are circular rods having the low refractive index or air holes. The right-angle bending waveguide having the circular-hole-type square-lattice PhC and the single compensation scattering rod having the low refractive index has extremely low reflectance and a very high transmission rate, facilitates large-scale optical path integration, and provides a broader space for PhC application.

Abstract: The invention relates to a wavelength division multiplexing optical receiver that is provided with a polarization splitting grating coupler and a driving method for the same, where the power consumption is reduced, and at the same time, a degradation in the receiver sensitivity is suppressed. Abstract: A low loss high extinction ratio on-chip polarizer is disclosed. The polarizer is formed of a mode convertor followed by a mode squeezer and a dump waveguide, and may be configured to pass a desired waveguide mode and reject undesired modes. An embodiment is described that transmits a TE0 mode while blocking a TM0 mode by converting the TM0 mode into a higher-order TEn mode in a waveguide taper, squeezing out the TEn mode in a second waveguide taper to lessen its confinement, and then dumping the TEn mode in a waveguide bend that is configured to pass the TE0 mode.
