In a digital device having an input thereto comprising a digital sample stream at a frequency F, a method for employing a component therein designed to work at a frequency less than F. The method in general comprises the steps of, dividing the digital sample stream into odd and even digital sample streams each at a frequency of F/2; passing one of the digital sample streams through the component designed to work at a frequency less than F wherein said component responds only to the odd or even digital samples in the one of the digital sample streams; delaying the other of the digital sample streams for the time it takes the one of the digital sample streams to pass through the component; and, adding the one of the digital sample streams after passing through the component with the delayed other of the digital sample streams. In the specific example, the component is a finite-impulse-response filter of order [(N+1)/2] and the step of delaying comprises passing the other of the digital sample streams through a shift register for a time (in sampling periods) of [(N+1)/2]+r, where r is a pipeline delay through the finite-impulse-response filter.

A dual purpose receiver operable both on FM analog (voice) and MSK digital (data) signals has a demodulation section having a selectable time delay D.sub.1 for processing MSK digital signals and a time delay D.sub.2 for processing FM analog signals. A switch permits selection of the time delay for the demodulating mode desired. A second switch set according to how the first switch is set connects a digital processing circuit or an analog processing circuit to the output of the demodulation section. Small frequency errors due to frequency drift of the local oscillator or signal source and doppler effects can be eliminated by an automatic frequency control (AFC) circuit responsive to the output of the demodulator in the analog mode, and through a third switch responsive to a signal developed by mixing the input signal with the input signal delayed by a time delay D.sub.1, and mixing the output of that mixer with the binary output of the receiver in the MSK mode.

Apparatus is depicted which enables the sampling of the phase angle of a modulated signal and manipulates the sample signals to demodulate the same. The apparatus is particularly adaptable for use in demodulating the I and Q channel signals of a zero IF receiver. The system contains an angle sensing circuit which combines the I and Q channel signals in differential form to produce a series of output signals of an angular range indicative of the present value of the instanteous phase. The signals from the angle detector are coupled to an octant decoder which operates to determine the particular octant that the angle is to be included in. In the present system eight octants are used, each comprising 45.degree.. The octant decoder determines which octant the angle belongs in and assigns a predetermined angle value to that angle. In one embodiment, the assigned angle values are 0.degree., 45.degree., 90.degree., 135.degree., 180.degree., 225.degree., 270.degree. or 315.degree.. The value of the assigned angles are then sampled by means of a clock at a high frequency rate whereby the resultant pulses indicative of the angles are then processed as differentiated to produce an output signal indicative of the information content on the original signal.

A digital filter and demodulation arrangement for passband signals, whose corresponding baseband signal has a bandwidth limited to a given maximum frequency. The passband signals are filtered according to two bandpass characteristics which, apart from their asymmetrical distortion relative to their central frequency, are versions from one another shifted 90.degree. in phase. The filtered passband signals are demodulated with an in-phase carrier and a quadrature carrier and the demodulated signals are combined to a baseband signal.In the digital filtering process the sampling frequency is reduced from a value higher than twice the highest frequency in the passband signals to a value which is not higher than twice said maximum frequency in the baseband signal and in the digital demodulation and combination processes the reduced sampling frequency is also used so that a considerable reduction in the internal processing speed is obtained.
