A wheel speed control device in an antilock brake system prevents the wheels of a vehicle such as an automobile from locking while braking. First and second brake pressure controllers are provided in which the first is a conventional differentiation type brake pressure controller and in which the second is an integration type brake pressure controller. Thus, a state such as an excessively low slip speed resulting from insufficient brake pressure, which was difficult to detect with a differentiation type main brake pressure controller, can be detected. This makes it possible to precisely and effectively control wheel speeds by executing minor pressure increase in which the brake pressure is increased at a low rate.

In an antilock braking system, when wheel parameters including slip represent an incipient wheel lockup condition normally calling for a release of brake pressure during a pressure apply mode of an antilock braking cycle and the duration of the pressure apply mode is less than a predetermined threshold representing an abnormal rapid cycling of the brake pressure, the wheel slip threshold representing an incipient wheel lockup condition is increased, the rate of increase in brake pressure during the brake pressure apply mode is set to a high level and the pressure apply mode is continued during which the wheel brake pressure is ramped at the increased rate. These steps are repeated while the wheel parameters represent an incipient wheel lockup condition normally calling for a release of brake pressure until the time of the pressure apply mode equals the predetermined threshold representing a normal brake pressure cycling period. At this time, the rate of pressure increase during the apply mode is returned to normal and the system is set to a release mode wherein the brake pressure is released. The slip threshold is thereby adjusted to establish normal brake pressure cycling.

For measuring the rotational speed of a wheel in an antilocking protected vehicle brake system a rotational speed sensor is provided in which in accordance with the rotational speed of the wheel signals are electromagnetically induced which have an amplitude and frequency which increase regularly with the rotational speed. When due to error sources the amplitude of the induced signal does not increase with the frequency of the signal a rotational speed measured value is determined by means of the measured amplitude, i.e. not on the basis of the measured frequency. To avoid erroneous measuring signals it may likewise be provided that when the amplitude of the signal does not increase with its frequency the last measured value of the frequency of the induced signal at which the amplitude still increased with the frequency is used to determine the speed of rotation.

In the present invention, the conditions necessary for the change from the reducing-pressure mode to the holding pressure mode are changed based on the length of the period of instability from the beginning of wheel slippage to the stopping of this slippage, and the length of the period of continued severe locking in which the slip ratio of the wheel exceeds a certain fixed value. Therefore, even when there is a disturbance in the form of roughnesses in the road surface or the like, this is determined to be a temporary phenomenon and the switching of the setting from the reducing-pressure mode to the holding pressure mode can take place in a reliable manner, and the usual, stable braking power can be achieved in correspondence with the relationship between the road surface and the tires.

The invention is directed to an arrangement for monitoring a road condition which determines the coefficient of friction of the road surface on the basis of a signal corresponding to an acceleration of a vehicle detected by an acceleration sensor. The signal is converted into one of at least two predetermined values by conversion means in response to a magnitude of the acceleration every cycle of a predetermined time period. The converted value is summed up by summing means by a predetermined number of consecutive cycles to provide a total value in the last cycle thereof which is stored in memory means. Then, in determination means, one of at least two standard values is selected in response to the condition of increase or decrease of the total value in the present cycle provided by the summing means as compared with the total value in the previous cycle stored in the memory means. And, the total value in the present cycle is compared with the above one of at least two standard values to produce a road condition signal corresponding to a result of comparison which represents the coefficient of friction of the road surface. The present system is applicable to an anti-skid control system for an automotive vehicle.

During nonexecution of antiskid control, a highest speed among the speeds of the undriven wheels is selected to calculate the speed of the vehice body, while during execution of antiskid control, another highest speed among the speeds of the undriven wheels and the speeds of the driven wheels lower than the speed stored in the storage is selected to calculate the speed of the vehicle body.

The reference value for slip measuring, derived from non-driven or rolling wheels, is tested for physically impossible conditions and, if such physically impossible conditions obtain, they are disregarded when determining slipping or tendency to slip. Proper speed values can be stored, utilized for subsequent measurement, directly or modified, which may also be made speed dependent, or dependent on differences between the speeds of two rolling wheels.

A microcomputer based electronic control unit for an anti-skid braking system includes monitoring means for testing the correct operation of the anti-skid braking system, including the electronic control unit. The disabling means includes microcomputer resetting means which in the event of program execution falling out of synchronization resets the microcomputer. The monitoring means test whether or not the wheel speed sensors are short circuited or disconnected. The unit also includes a load dump protection function, an electromagnetic interference suppression circuit and a warning light drive which may additionally be used to output diagnostic information.

According to the invention, an accelerometer (G) is attached on the spring suspension (U) of the wheel (H) in question and capable upon passing of the vehicle over road irregularities to emit a decaying A.C. signal (S) with information on the oscillations of the axle (A) and the damping of the tire. After integration in an integrator (I) the signal is a measure of the difference between the damping of the shock absorber at expansion and at compression. This signal is compared in a comparator (K) with a reference signal (V.sub.ref) for the permissible damping difference and results in alarm (L) upon achieving said difference.
