A muffler includes a pair of internal plates that are formed to define an array of channels and at least one chamber. The internal plates are connected in face-to-face relationship such that the channels define tubes that communicate with the chamber. At least one short section of conventional tube may be disposed between the plates to achieve a selected exhaust gas flow pattern. The connected internal plates is slid longitudinally into a tubular outer shell and end caps are secured to opposed ends to substantially enclose the muffler. The internal plates can be remanufactured prior to insertion into the tubular outer shell, and can be slid into tubular external shells of different lengths for significantly altering the acoustical tuning of the muffler.

A muffler for use on an internal combustion engine includes an enclosure generally cylindrical and having end plates for closing the internal volume of the enclosure, at least one partition plate for dividing the internal volume of the enclosure into at least two chambers, an inlet tube, supported by one of said end plates and at least one partition plate, for conducting combustion gases supplied from the engine to one of the chambers; an outlet tube, supported by the other of the end plates and at least one partition plate, for blowing out the gases from remaining one of the chambers; and a connecting tube supported by said at least one partition plate for interconnecting the volume of adjacent ones of the chambers. At least two of the inlet, outlet and connecting tubes are integrally made of a single sheet of metal shaped to form a combination tube including the at least two tubes. A method of manufacturing such a combination tube is also provided.

The invention is a venturi of unusual configuration and a method and apparatus for forming such a venturi in a single operation from a rounded, deformable tube. According to the invention, diametrically opposing sides of the tube are inwardly deflected in increasing amounts from opposing ends of the tube so as to form along the length of the tube from either end a first chamber of increasingly flattened and reduced cross-section followed by a second chamber of decreasingly flattened and reduced cross-section. An elongated throat section of maximally flattened and reduced cross-section may be provided between the first and second chambers, particularly for engine muffler venturis. The tube is conveniently deformed by applying pressure to a pair of its opposing sides along at least a portion of its length, preferably by pairs of opposing dies or eccentric rollers. Venturis for engine mufflers are conveniently fabricated from thin walled steel tubes by cold forming the tubes in the manner described. In cold forming, sidewalls between the flattened walls are typically outwardly bulged as well. The outward bulging may be constrained such that the central throat section has a substantially rectangular cross-sectional shape.

An exhaust treatment system for a work vehicle, which has an exhaust conduit transmitting an exhaust flow from an engine and to a DOC system, is disclosed. The DOC system has a reductant introduced and mixed into the exhaust flow, and a DOC conduit connects the DOC to a center inlet of an SCR. The SCR includes at least two exhaust chambers. When the exhaust flow enters the SCR at the center inlet, the exhaust flow enters a central chamber where it is split into at least two separate exhaust flows which are moved in at least two different directions away from each other. Each separate exhaust flow is moved through a separate exhaust chamber and substrate. A conduit moves at least one of the separate exhaust flows into an area holding another exhaust flow, and the two separate exhaust flows are combined and expelled through an outlet.

The exhaust system includes a first filter and a second filter, each filter having an inlet and an outlet. The inlets are inline with the respective first and second filters, and the outlets are transversely arranged with reference to the respective filters. Vehicles may have an overall length of about 35 feet or less and have an unladen weight of around 25,000 lbs or less.
