The resistance of polyvinyl chloride resins to the development of yellow to orange reversible discoloration when heated in the presence of water at moderately elevated temperatures above 80.degree. C. up to about 160.degree. C. is improved by combining therewith an N,N'-diphenyl urea. Such reversible discoloration is not associated with any heat instability, and the resistance of the polyvinyl chloride resin to deterioration when heated at processing temperatures of 150.degree. C. and above is then improved by incorporation of the usual polyvinyl chloride resin heat stabilizers.

This invention is directed to novel sizing agent compositions containing urea which is chemically modified and/or combined with other materials which produce desirable sizing properties. These novel agents are used as beater additives in pulp refining for the manufacture of cellulosic products or are applied to finished cellulosic products as surface sizes. The invention is also directed to methods of making the sizing agents. In one preferred embodiment, urea is reacted with sulfamic acid and the resulting reaction product is combined with rosin and further reacted to produce a novel sizing agent.

This invention relates to a process for the preparation of a cellulose hydrate moulding which comprises (a) treating a cellulose hydrate moulding while in the gel state, for a period within the range of from 10 seconds to 20 minutes, with an aqueous liquid having dissolved therein at least one plasticizer, a chemical cross-linking agent comprising at least one cyclic urea compound having at least 2 N-methylol groups, and at least one cross-linking catalyst, (b) drying the moulding to a residual water content of from 8 to 12% by weight, and (c) heating the moulding at a temperature within the range of from 100.degree. to 150.degree.C for a period of from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. The invention also relates to a cellulose hydrate moulding prepared by the novel process.

The subject of the invention is a process for the manufacture of polycondensation products from hydroxymethylphosphonium compounds, characterised in that at least one anhydrous tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt or tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium hydroxide is condensed with itself in an anhydrous medium, optionally using an acid catalyst and optionally in the presence of at least one inert organic solvent, at 100* to 150*C, preferably 120* to 150*C, the condensation being continued until 0.5 to 1.5 mols of water have been eliminated per 1 mol of phosphonium compound employed, free hydroxyl groups are, if appropriate, at least partially etherified with at least one alkanol with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and that the salt of the polycondensation products are, where relevant, converted into the corresponding hydroxides. The polycondensation products are used for the flameproofing of organic fibre material, especially textiles. Appropriately, the procedure followed is that an aqueous preparation is applied to these materials which contains at least (1) a polycondensation product of the indicated type and (2) a polyfunctional compound, and that the material thus treated are dried and subjected to a heat treatment.

The soil and stain repellency of extruded filaments of a synthetic resin can be improved by incorporating in the resin a small amount, about 1%, of an amphipathic compound having from one to four fluoroalkyl groups pendent from an organic radical. The repellency is provided by the fluoroalkyl groups, which tend to be concentrated at the surface of the fiber.
