Abstract:
A composition including a first fiber derived from a first natural source, and a second fiber derived from a fruit, the second fiber being substantially free of surface active components. Surface active components may include oils, fatty acids, or other aliphatic and aromatic moieties that compromise edge wick performance. A process of manufacturing a paperboard product may include removing surface active components from fruit fiber to be included in manufacturing paper products to obtain a paper product with improved edge wicking properties.
Abstract:
The present application discloses a sizing method for making paper. An alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) is added to a papermaking process. An aluminum salt is added in one or more process steps during the papermaking process. Preferably, the aluminum salt is an aluminum salt which can generate free aluminum ion in aqueous solution. The sizing method of the present application enhances the usage efficiency of a sizing agent and the aluminum salt, as well as provides paper having a high moisture content.

Abstract:
A method of decreasing the rate of photoyellowing in paper containing mechanical pulp comprising: applying an aqueous solution containing an effective amount of one or more salts of thiocyanic acid on the surface of a paper sheet in a papermaking process.
Abstract:
The invention disclosed herein is directed to a modified rosin emulsion, to methods for making the modified emulsion and to uses for the emulsion. The modified emulsion of the invention is made by mixing emulsified rosin solids with a water soluble salt of an alkylene-acrylic acid copolymer.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a sizing composition comprising a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic rosins having an acid number less than 50, thermoplastic hydrocarbon resins, thermoplastic polyamides and thermoplastic amide waxes, its use in sizing paper and paper sized with the sizing agent. The invention also relates to a method of sizing paper comprising use of a composition comprising a thermoplastic rosin, wherein the sizing takes place substantially in the absence of alum, and paper so sized.
Abstract:
A method of preparing biodegradable, water-resistant, moldable paper board or molded paper utensil which includes the steps of: (a) preparing a pulp aqueous slurry at a consistency of about 4%; (b) adding surfactant selected from the group consisting of rosin soap, sodium oleate, sodium stearate, and sodium palmitate to the pulp aqueous slurry; (c) adding between 25-75% weight of a biodegradable and water-resistant agent selected from the group consisting of calcium stearate, cellulose stearate, calcium palmitate and cellulose palmitate to the pulp aqueous slurry to form a slurry mixture; (d) refining the slurry mixture at a consistency of about 4% to a desired drainage; (e) diluting the refined slurry mixture and adding thereto an aggregating agent as alum to form a furnish; (f) forming the furnish to obtain a dry moldable soft paper board; (g) preheating the moldable paper board obtained in step (f) at a temperature from 110.degree. to 170.degree. C.; and (h) hot-pressing the preheated moldable paper board obtained in step (g) in a mold at a temperature from 115.degree. to 170.degree. C. for 2 to 40 seconds to obtain a molded paper utensil.
Abstract:
A packing paper, superior in antibacterial activity, deodorization and electroconductivity, which is prepared by a method having the steps of making a pulp-dispersed mixture comprising 80 to 94% by weight of an aqueous pulp, 1 to 5% by weight of carbon staple 20 microns or less in diameter, and 5 to 15% by weight of acrylic staple 15 microns or less in diameter and dispersing a rosin and a mineral filler at an amount of 0.5 to 1 g and 15 to 20 g per liter of the pulp-dispersed mixture, respectively. The method further includes the step of forming the resulting mixture into a paper material. The method also includes the step of passing the paper material through several calendars maintained at a temperature of 120.degree. to 150.degree. C.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a paper sizing composition comprising a rosin material and cationic acrylamide and/or methacrylamide polymers having hydrophobic groups wherein said rosin material is directly emulsified in water with said polymers. The sizing composition has an improved storage stability and exhibits an excellent sizing performance in the acidic through neutral pH range.
Abstract:
A water dispersible active sizing composition comprises an active size such as alkyl succinic acid and an effective proportion (e.g. 10-30% by weight) of a dispersant therefor, said dispersant comprising a polyalkoxylate of a rosin or fortified rosin, and/or a water dispersible organic derivative thereof such as a maleinate or succinate half ester.
