The present invention is directed to a high speed spindle motor comprising a stator assembly including a stator having multiple conductors that create a plurality of magnetic fields when electrical current is conducted by the conductors and a body of a phase change material such as a thermoplastic substantially encapsulating the stator. A rotatable hub having a magnet connected thereto is in operable proximity to the stator. The high speed motor also includes a shaft, a bearing surrounding the shaft and one of the bearing or shaft being fixed to the stator assembly and the other of the bearing or shaft being fixed to the rotatable hub. Hard disc drives using the motor, and methods of developing and constructing the motor and hard disc drives are also disclosed.

A multi-pole generator rotor and a method of making the same are disclosed. A multi-pole generator rotor includes a rotor body having a central portion with a generally cylindrical outer surface. The outer surface includes three pairs of diametrically opposed slots extending along a length of the central portion, with each of the slots being sized to receive therein a plurality of wires. Each of the slots further includes a pair of opposed retaining flanges. A plurality of retaining members are sized for insertion into a corresponding one of the slots. Each retaining member engages a pair of the retaining flanges from its corresponding slot. The retaining members thereby retaining the wires disposed in each slot against radially outward displacement. A method of forming a multi-pole generator rotor includes the steps of providing the above rotor body, winding first, second and third wire coils by repeatedly winding a wire through a first, second, and third set of opposing slot pairs, and inserting a retaining member longitudinally into each of the slots.

A method and structure for restricting relative sliding motion at the interfaces between a superconducting winding and a supporting structure for the winding. An interface lining material having a low shear modulus of elasticity so as to accommodate large shear displacements with low shear stresses is used as opposed to the use of sliding frictional contact between the contacting surfaces of the electrical winding and the supporting structure. The invention is completed by subjecting the lined interfaced surfaces to large compressional pressure forces so that frictional forces between the interface material and the opposing superconducting winding and supporting structure surfaces, even at low coefficients of friction, are considerably higher than the internal shear forces of the interfacing lining material. The superconducting winding is comprised of a plurality of conductors of superconducting material bunched together in close thermal contact with each other and secured in a solid winding bundle by epoxy resin. The interface lining material preferably is wrapped completely around and surrounds the superconducting winding.

This invention relates to an improved wire wound disc type armature for electric motors or generators. The armature has a disc shaped body mounted on a central shaft with a commutator formed of spaced insulated commutator elements located around it. The disc shaped body has opposing flat sides on which a predetermined number of wire windings are located. The insulated wire forming each winding extends outward from the commutator through a U-shaped wire channel on one side of the disc shaped armature and back through a corresponding wire channel on the other side. The disc shaped body of the armature is formed of high strength plastic and the wire channels are formed of laminated steel. In one embodiment, the wire then passes through an aperture in the disc shaped body associated with each winding and back out through the first wire channel and this is repeated until a winding of a desired number of turns is formed in the two channels. This structure and winding configuration provides the significant advantage that the amount of wire used which does not pass through the magnetic field during use is kept to a minimum. This reduces initial wire costs and more significantly, decreases heat and other losses which otherwise occurs in the excess wire, as well as minimizes interference currents which may be induced on current reversals.
