Methods and electronic devices are adapted to facilitate the detection of text and computer generated graphics in digital imagery for encoding such content in a manner to preserve details. According to one example, an electronic device can mathematically combine pixel values associated with respective pixels from a subgroup of pixels of a digital image according to a plurality of predefined patterns, where each predefined pattern is different from the other predefined patterns. If the result from the mathematical combination is greater than or equal to a predefined threshold, the subgroup of pixels may be determined to include text content and/or computer generated graphic content. On the other hand, if the result from the mathematical combination is less than the predefined threshold, the subgroup of pixels may be determined to not include text content or computer generated graphic content.
