摘要: A method of making a light weight component is provided. The method including the steps of: forming a metallic foam core into a desired configuration; inserting a pre-machined component into an opening in the metallic foam core; applying an external metallic shell to an exterior surface of the metallic foam core after it has been formed into the desired configuration and after the pre-machined component has been inserted into the metallic foam core; introducing an acid into an internal cavity defined by the external metallic shell; dissolving the metallic foam core; and removing the dissolved metallic foam core from the internal cavity, wherein the component and the external metallic shell are resistant to the acid.

摘要: Provided is a porous metal body having superior corrosion resistance to conventional metal porous bodies composed of nickel-tin binary alloys and conventional metal porous bodies composed of nickel-chromium binary alloys. The porous metal body has a three-dimensional network skeleton and contains at least nickel, tin, and chromium. The concentration of chromium contained in the porous metal body is highest at the surface of the skeleton of the porous metal body and decreases toward the inner side of the skeleton. In one embodiment, the chromium concentration at the surface of the skeleton of the porous metal body is more preferably 3% by mass or more and 70% by mass or less.

摘要: A friction stir welding (FSW) tool tip is described. The tool tip comprises a pin portion and a body portion that meet to form a shoulder. The tool tip has a graduated change in composition along its length. In some embodiments, the alloy composition near the end of the pin differs from the alloy composition of the body by at least 0.5% by wt of at least one element. A method of manufacturing a FSW tool tip having a gradual compositional change is also described.

摘要: An Fe—Mo—Cu—C-based alloy steel powder for powder metallurgy has a chemical composition containing Mo: 0.2 mass % to 1.5 mass %, Cu: 0.5 mass % to 4.0 mass %, and C: 0.1 mass % to 1.0 mass %, with a balance being Fe and incidental impurities, wherein an iron-based powder has a mean particle size of 30 μm to 120 μm, and a Cu powder has a mean particle size of 25 μm or less. Despite the alloy steel powder for powder metallurgy having a chemical composition not containing Ni, a part produced by sintering a press formed part of the powder and further carburizing-quenching-tempering the sintered part has mechanical properties of at least as high tensile strength, toughness, and sintered density as a Ni-added part.

摘要: A material and method are disclosed such that the material can be used to form functional metal pieces by producing an easily sintered layered body of dried metal paste. On a microstructural level, when dried, the metal paste creates a matrix of porous metal scaffold particles with infiltrant metal particles, which are positioned interstitially in the porous scaffold's interstitial voids. For this material to realize mechanical and processing benefits, the infiltrant particles are chosen such that they pack in the porous scaffold piece in a manner which does not significantly degrade the packing of the scaffold particles and so that they can also infiltrate the porous scaffold on heating. The method of using this paste provides a technique with high rate and resolution of metal part production due to a hybrid deposition/removal process.
