A method establishes a phase reference signal for trellis demodulating CPM modulated received signals by using phase reference signals and symbol timing estimates. Branch metrics signals representing the highest-probability path through the trellis are calculated to produce beat estimates of the modulation data. The branch metrics signals are phase shifted to produce phase shifted branch metrics (PSBM) for each path. At each symbol interval, the highest probability PSEM (HPPSBM) signal for the path is selected. The selected phase shifted branch metric adjusts the value of the phase reference signals. Another method estimates the transmitted signal from at least the estimated data and the phase reference signal. The estimated transmitted signal is phase shifted to produce phase shifted estimated transmitted signals, which are correlated with the received data signals to produce phase error signals, which are smoothed and correct the phase reference signal.

A robust data extension added to a standard 8VSB digital television signal is used to improve the performance of a digital television receiver. The robust data extension is added to a standard 8VSB digital television transmission system by encoding high priority data packets in a rate null trellis encoder. The high priority data null trellis encoded packets are then multiplexed with normal data packets and input into the normal data service of an 8VSB system, which further contains a rate null trellis encoder. The combined trellis encoding results in a rate null trellis encoding for robust data packets and a rate null trellis encoding for normal packets. Backward compatibility with existing receivers is maintained for 1) 8VSB signaling, 2) trellis encoding and decoding, 3) Reed Solomon encoding and decoding, and 4) MPEG compatibility. In addition to delivery of robust data for mobile applications, the redundant robust data packets also improve the performance of the receiver in the normal tier of service. In particular, the robust data packets improve the performance of the receiver equalizer filter in the presence of rapidly changing transient channel conditions such as dynamic multipath for both robust data packets and normal data packets. The robust data packets improve the performance of the carrier recovery loop and the symbol timing recovery loop.

A wireless communication technique enables equalization, soft demapping and phase error estimation functions to be performed jointly based on multiple observations of a transmitted symbol in wireless communication systems employing receive diversity. Multiple observations of a symbol are obtained from multiple antenna paths in a wireless receiver. Equalization, soft demapping and phase error estimation functions can be integrated within shared hardware, rather than distributed among separate hardware blocks, promoting reduced size, complexity and cost in a wireless receiver.

A receiver device implements enhanced data reception with edge-based clock and data recovery such as with a flash analog-to-digital converter architecture. In an example embodiment, the device implements a first phase adjustment control loop, with for example, a bang-bang phase detector, that detects data transitions for adjusting sampling at an optimal edge time with an edge sampler by adjusting a phase of an edge clock of the sampler. This loop may further adjust sampling in received data intervals for optimal data reception by adjusting the phase of a data clock of a data sampler such a flash ADC. The device may also implement a second phase adjustment control loop with, for example, a baud-rate phase detector, that detects data intervals for further adjusting sampling at an optimal data time with the data sampler.

The decisional feedback loop includes a converter that generates a baseband signal, a detector that generates a decision signal, a restorative signal generator that generates a restorative signal using remodulation, and a carrier loop that generates a frequency correction signal and provides a frequency-offset estimate. The restorative signal and the frequency correction signal are provided to the converter to compensate for inter-symbol interference. The presented “remodulation” technique decouples interaction between the carrier loop, the pre-filters, and the equalizer of the restorative signal generator, providing an architecture that is more stable and significantly faster than conventional architectures.

The present invention is directed to a method and system for detecting and compensating for signal impairments in modulated signals. Phase noise and gain noise based signal impairments can be detected as a function of the difference between the optimal position in the constellation grid (the center) and the actual position in the constellation grid of a received symbol. As symbols are received, they are compared to optimal positions and a measure of the phase noise and gain noise can be determined for each symbol. Over a period of time, the detector can compute an average measure of phase noise and gain noise. When the average measure of phase noise and/or gain noise reaches a predefined threshold, the detector can indicate a phase noise based and/or gain noise based signal impairment has been detected to the receiver. The receiver can adjust one or more receive parameters in order to improve reception. Burst noise based signal impairments can be detected as a function of the number of QAM symbols that have an i component or a q component that exceeds the maximum constellation value in a predefined period of time or in the course of a predefined number of symbols received. When the number of number of QAM symbols having burst noise exceeds reaches a predefined threshold, the detector can indicate a burst noise signal impairment to the receiver and the receiver can adjust one or more receive parameters in order to improve reception.
