A cylinder head for an internal combustion engine has a substantially greater height than conventional cylinder heads, and intake and exhaust ports which extend angularly upwardly in the head from the combustion chamber to a respective surface of the head. Intake and exhaust valves are provided in the head for controlling flow through the intake and exhaust ports, and the valves are tilted both longitudinally and laterally with respect to the head. The intake and exhaust ports are skewed in the head to closely align the axes of the ports with the angle of the respective valves. Valve operating components are recessed into the top surface of the head, enabling a flat valve cover to be used for enclosing the valve operating components. The invention is particularly directed to a cylinder head having a generally wedge-shaped combustion chamber, and the height of the head in a specific construction is about six inches, with the intake ports angled upwardly at about 30.degree. and the exhaust ports angled upwardly at about 60.degree.. The ports are longer and straighter in the head of the invention than in conventional heads, resulting in improved flow of intake and exhaust gases.

A process for renewing a cylinder head, preferably a cast aluminum water cooled cylinder head from a used condition to a rebuilt condition suitable for reuse. In a qualifying stage the used cylinder head is stripped of removable parts, inspected, heat treated for cleaning and stress relieving purposes, and then pressure tested to detect leaks through cracks or excessive porosity. If cracks are located, the cylinder head passes through a reconstruction stage wherein cracked areas are removed and replaced by welded material, recontoured and preferably again pressure tested. A cylinder head which did not need reconstruction (or after reconstruction) then passes to the rebuilding stage where it is essentially machined and component parts replaced. Included in the rebuilding stage is a line-boring and surface gasket facing procedure for eliminating the adverse effects of warpage and a vacuum impregnation step to seal the pores of the cylinder head.

Thermal restraints associated with internal combustion engines create complex problems which must be overcome in order to provide life and durability of the engine. The present device overcomes these problems by providing a pair of notches positioned in a bridge connection at least two housings. The housings have a predetermined stiffness and the bridge has a predetermined stiffness less than that of the housings. The pair of notches extend between the housings. The thermal relief provided by the pair of notches introduces concentration factors to the low stiffness area. As a result the low stiffness area is able to expand and reduce the thermal compressive stress.

The heat-insulating engine structure according to the invention comprises fitting a ceramic head liner for which a cylinder liner top and a head lower surface portion are unified structurally in a cylinder head, coating an outer surface of the cylinder liner top of the head liner with a heat insulating laminate with a metallic sheet and a heat insulating material with potassium titanate as a principal component wound spirally by turns with a compressive force exerted thereon, thus enhancing strength or pressure resistance, forming a wall of the head liner as thin as possible to minimize a thermal capacity of the head liner, thereby enhancing suction efficiency and cycle efficiency. Further, heat insulation efficiency is enhanced all the more by disposing the heat insulating laminate having air layers between the head liner and the cylinder head. The manufacturing method for the heat insulating engine structure comprises heating the metallic sheet for thermal expansion, placing the heat insulating material on the metallic sheet, winding up spirally the metallic sheet on which the heat insulating material is placed to an outer peripheral surface of the cylinder liner top of the ceramic head liner, exerting a compressive force on the cylinder liner top by contraction of the metallic sheet thereafter, thereby ensuring the structure that withstands high pressures despite the thin-walled head liner.

A cylinder head for a water-cooled internal combustion engine has a lower and an upper cylinder head portion fitting over one another along a parting plane traversing cooling chambers complementally formed in the lower and upper cylinder head portions. The lower cylinder head portion has intake and exhaust ports and is tightened to a cylinder block. The upper cylinder head portion carries a valve operating assembly of the engine. A cylinder head cover is situated above the upper cylinder head portion and covers the valve operating assembly. The lower cylinder head portion has a circumferential lower wall bounding a liquid-guiding chamber provided in the lower cylinder head portion and serving for returning oil from the upper cylinder head portion. The lower cylinder head portion also has a circumferential upper wall constituting an upward continuation of the lower wall and extending from the intake and exhaust ports. The circumferential upper wall has a circumferential seating face supporting the cylinder head cover. The upper cylinder head portion is not in a direct contact with the cylinder head cover.

Main and auxiliary recesses communicating with each other are formed by at least two projections in the combustion chamber of a reciprocating internal combustion engine, which is defined by a piston, a cylinder head and a cylinder block. A swirling mechanism for swirling the intake air is disposed in an intake mechanism for supplying the intake air into the combustion chamber. A swirl of intake air is generated in the main recess by the swirling mechanism and is accelerated and introduced into the main recess as the piston rises. A turbulent layer is formed while the swirl is converted occasionally into turbulences by the projections. Secondary swirls other than the main swirl are generated in the auxiliary recesses. Turbulences are further generated between the swirl and the secondary swirls thereby to improve combustion efficiency.
