A valve-driving system for an internal combustion engine is provided with: an electric motor for generating a rotational driving force to drive a valve for intake or exhaust mounted on a cylinder in the internal combustion engine so as to open and close the valve in synchronization with a piston motion in the internal combustion engine; a transmitting device capable of changing between (i) a first condition to transmit therethrough the rotational driving force to the valve from said electric motor and (ii) a second condition to stop an opening or closing operation of the valve or to make the valve driven by a low lift amount; a judging device for judging whether or not synchronization between the opening or closing operation of the valve and the piston motion is abnormal; and a fail-safe device for changing said transmitting device to the second condition if it is judged by the judging device that the synchronization is abnormal.

The lift of an intake valve of at least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine is diagnosed. A value for a specific cylinder which is representative of the air/fuel ratio in the respective cylinder is determined in an exhaust system branch of the internal combustion engine. At least one such value is compared to a predefined value. An erroneous lift of the intake valve is diagnosed as a function of the deviation of this at least one value from the predefined value.

The system may comprise a valve train element, pivoting bridge, an adjustable tappet, and a valve stem. The pivoting bridge may include a first end for contacting the adjustable tappet, a second end for contacting the valve stem and a pivot point between the first and second ends for contacting the valve train element. The amount of lost motion provided by the system may be selected by varying the position of the adjustable tappet relative to the pivoting bridge. Variation of the adjustable tappet position may be carried out by placing the adjustable tappet in hydraulic communication with a control trigger valve. Actuation of the trigger valve releases hydraulic fluid allowing for adjustment of the adjustable tappet position.

In starting the engine, if it is determined that large cams are not completely prepared for all driving cams, valve closing timings of all intake valves are changed by driving the VVT so that all of the cylinders have equal in-cylinder filling efficiency. A fuel injection amount of each cylinder is determined by a feedforward control assuming that the large cams are completely prepared for all of the driving cams. When the valve closing timing of all of the intake valves are changed by driving the VVT to equalize the in-cylinder filling efficiencies of all of the cylinders, all of the cylinders have substantially equal in-cylinder air-fuel ratios.

The present invention relates to a control device and a control method for a variable valve timing mechanism that changes a valve timing by adjusting a rotational speed of a motor. The control device detects a phase angle RA1 based on an output of a crank angle sensor and an output of a cam angle sensor and calculates a change amount ΔRA of a rotational phase based on a difference between a rotation amount of a sprocket and a rotation amount of the motor. The control device stops calculating change amount ΔRA when a failure occurs in a motor rotation angle sensor. When a failure occurs in one of the crank angle sensor or the cam angle sensor, the control device stops calculating phase angle RA1 and calculates change amount ΔRA using a normal one of the sensors and the motor rotation angle sensor.
