Abstract: A slide cam system includes a camshaft comprising a carrier shaft with slide cam elements that each comprise a slotted switching member having a switching groove. The slide cam elements are displaceable axially relative to the carrier shaft by an actuator pin. A displacement element is arranged parallel with a longitudinal axis of the carrier shaft, and the displacement element is axially displaceable in a direction of the longitudinal axis. The displacement element has a first coupling pin arranged in a region of the first slide cam element and a second coupling pin arranged in a region of the second slide cam element. The coupling pins cooperate with a slotted switching member of the associated slide cam element such that as a result of the displacement element a movement initiated by the actuator pin of the first slide cam element can be transmitted to the second slide cam element.

Abstract: An engine variable valve operating apparatus includes a cam switching mechanism having a switching drive shaft. When the switching drive shaft is longitudinally moved, a cam mechanism advances and retracts a switching pin. When the switching pin is advanced to engage in a lead groove formed around a cam carrier and the cam carrier is axially moved while rotating, cam lobes around the cam carrier are switched to act on an engine valve. An actuator for the switching drive shaft includes an actuator drive body which is linearly reciprocally movable and is coupled to a longitudinal end of the switching drive shaft to axially move the same. The above arrangement enables the cam switching mechanism and the actuator mechanism to be simple and compact in structure for preventing the engine from becoming large in size.

Abstract: A method for heating a sliding camshaft actuator at cold engine start wherein the sliding camshaft actuator includes at least one magnetic field generating coil having a core, a piston armature disposed in the core of the magnetic field generating coil, a magnet in mechanical communication with the piston armature, and an actuator pin in mechanical communication with the magnet. The method includes detecting a cold engine start condition and reversing an energizing voltage on the magnetic field generating coil when the outside temperature is below a predetermined temperature threshold. The reverse energizing voltage on the magnetic field generating coil is maintained for a predetermined period of time to heat the piston armature, the magnet, and the actuator pin.

Abstract: A variable valve-operating device for an internal combustion engine has a cam carrier with cam lobes formed therearound to act on an engine valve and with a speed increasing side lead groove and a speed decreasing side lead groove formed therearound to be engaged with a speed increasing side switching pin and a speed decreasing side switching pin, respectively, to axially shift the cam carrier, to selectively make one of the cam lobes to be operative. A speed increasing side entry lead groove portion of the speed increasing side lead groove is formed in a position axially overlapping a low speed steady position lead groove portion of the speed decreasing side lead groove. A speed decreasing side entry lead groove portion of the speed decreasing side entry lead groove is formed in a position axially overlapping a high speed steady position lead groove portion of the speed increasing side lead groove. The variable valve-operating device can thus be miniaturized by reducing the axial width of the cam carrier.

Abstract: When a stop request to the engine is issued, it is determined whether or not all of the drive cams are large cams. When it is determined that at least one of the small cams is included in the drive cams, the engine is continued to drive for a while and a switch control for switching the drive cams from the small cams to the large cams is executed within the duration. A self-holding type solenoid is used to switch between the small cams and the large cams. In the switch control, a permission to stop the engine is output at a timing when the “pin protrudable section” of the final cylinder #2 has elapsed.

Abstract: A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a switching period module and at least one of a valve lift control module and a start-stop control module. The switching period module determines a switching period that elapses as a valve lift actuator of an engine switches between a first valve lift position and a second valve lift position that is different than the first lift position. The switching period begins when a measured position of the valve lift actuator corresponds to the first lift position and the switching period ends when the measured position of the valve lift actuator corresponds to the second lift position. The valve lift control module controls the valve lift actuator based on the switching period. The start-stop control module determines whether to automatically stop the engine based on the switching period.
