A completely automated apparatus for verifying the identity and geometry of drill bits, re-sharpening the cutting tip of a drill bit and re-positioning a locating ring upon the shank portion of the drill bit subsequent to the re-sharpening of the cutting tip thereof. The apparatus comprises a housing having a pair of cassette trays, a pair of grinding assemblies, a pair of optical assemblies, a pair of primary cleaning assemblies, a pair of secondary cleaning assemblies, a pair of inversion assemblies, a pair of workhead assemblies, a bumping assembly, and a loader assembly attached thereto. The workhead and loader assemblies are used to transport drill bits between the cassette trays and other assemblies in a selected sequence which is controlled and coordinated by a programmable control device. The control device is electrically interfaced to each of the assemblies and allows the cutting tip re-sharpening and locating ring repositioning processes to be conducted simultaneously on at least two drill bits.

A bushingless workhead comprises a flexible drill collet inside a flexible chucking collet. The chucking collet has external frusto-conical surfaces on the ends thereof that mate with corresponding frusto-conical surfaces on a pair of pistons. The pistons are slidable within a housing away from each other to apply opposed forces to the chucking collet. The forces cause the chucking collet to collapse and to also collapse the drill collet to grip a tool inside the drill collet. One piston applies a greater force on the chucking collet than the other piston. The chucking collet is thus forced to move longitudinally in one direction, and it abuts a fixed reference surface that repeatably locates the chucking collet with each tool gripping operation prior to the chucking collet collapsing to grip the tool.

A drill grinder for grinding a point of a drill including a shank, and a body which has the point. The drill grinder includes a holding device for removably holding the drill, and a grinding wheel adapted to be forced on the drill point, and to thereby grind the point while the drill is held by the holding device. The holding device includes a first chuck for gripping the shank of the drill, and a second chuck for gripping the body of the drill. The grinder has a holder mounting device for removably holding the holder device during a grinding operation on the drill by the grinding wheel. The grinder may further includes a drill setting device for removably accommodating the holding device, to position the drill in a predetermined circumferential position relative to the second chuck, prior to the grind operation.

An improvement to a drill bit sharpening apparatus in the form of a simple spacer that provides the space setting between a drill bit point and the surface of a grinding device. The spacer comprises an elongated strip made of hard material; the width of the strip is not uniform and diminishes at two portions of the strip. The slanting angle of the portions corresponds to the Z-distances travelled by a drill bit supporting member so as to accomplish the setting. The strip also has calibration marks on its surface corresponding to a set of drill bit diameters for a given point angle. The spacer completely replaces the disc shaped and rectangular shaped prior art spacers.

This invention consists of a fixture used in conjunction with modern tool grinding machines making it possible to quickly and accurately grind and regrind the cutting tips of gun drills, gun bores, reamers, etc. This fixture can accomplish the grinding of various point angles, clearance angles, offsets, radii, cylindrical relief, and back slash; also rework of gun drill cutting faces, and clearance slash reliefs, with only one insertion of the tool into the fixture. The invention consists of a rectangular bar to which a front head and a rear head are attached. The front head mounts and clamps in the tool holder of the machine to be used, initially positions the tool to be ground and then supports the front end or tip of the tool during the grinding operation. The rear head is designed to hold and clamp the rear end or shank of the tool to be groung against any forward or backward movement but at the same time allows the tool to be cylindrically rotated and indexed to various positions during the grinding operation.
