Catalysts such as antimony halides, which are useful in fluorination reactions involving hydrogen fluoride, may be reduced during the reaction and require regeneration. Regenerative oxidation is usually carried out by introducing elemental halogen, preferably fluorine or chlorine, into the reaction mixture. In accordance with the invention elemental halogen is prevented from coming into contact with starting materials or intermediate products which are reactive therewith. This is preferably achieved by withdrawing part of the reaction mixture from the reactor, mixing the withdrawn part with chlorine or fluorine in order to regenerate the catalyst, and thereafter returning the withdrawn part to the reactor.

A process for producing difluoromethane is disclosed which includes the step of contacting a gaseous mixture containing CH.sub.2 Cl.sub.2 and hydrogen fluoride with a catalyst containing a catalytically effective amount of trivalent chromium supported on a carbon having an ash content of less than 0.5 percent by weight, at a temperature of from about 180.degree. C. to about 375.degree. C. The catalyst and temperature conditions of this process allow the concurrent reaction CCl.sub.3 CF.sub.3 with HF to form CCl.sub.2 FCF.sub.3. CH.sub.2 ClF and unreacted CH.sub.2 Cl.sub.2, each of which may be recovered as an azeotrope with HF, may be recycled.

There are provided production methods of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane characterized in that 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoro-2,3-dichloropropane is reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a noble metal catalyst; of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoro-2-halogeno-3-chloropropane characterized in that the halogenated propene indicated as general formula I is fluorinated in the presence of antimony trihalogenide and/or antimony pentahalogenide by hydrogen fluoride of mole ratio of or over five times the said antimony halogenide in a liquid phase; and of 1,1,1,2,3,3-hexachloropropene characterized in that 1,1,1,2,2,3,3-heptachloropropane is reacted with an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. Therefore, an industrial manufacturing method which is possible to obtain the objective product easily at low cost and high yield can be provided.
