    摘要: An apparatus and method for immunomagnetic separation and concentration of target biological materials is disclosed. The immunomagnetic separation is performed by a magnetic flow cell, or filter block, as part of an automated mostly continuous immunomagnetic assay system. The magnetic flow cell has two bundles of ferromagnetic rods or pins positioned inside an internal chamber so that a fluid sample flowing through the flow cell passes through the pins. A pair of cobalt magnets flank the flow cell so that the pins concentrate and sufficiently increase the magnetic fields so that even nanometer size magnetic beads can be captured. The overall system combines a reaction subsystem for reacting coated magnetic beads with a sample, a collection subsystem for capturing magnetic beads, a rinsing subsystem for removing debris and a filtering subsystem for removing captured magnetic beads from the collection subsystem. The new magnetic flow filter is the key component for the collection and filtering subsystems.

    摘要: Biological entities such as cells, microbes, or components thereof are labeled with a magnetic colloid containing microscopic magnetic particles. The magnetic particles have a coating capable of biospecific or non-specific binding with the entities. An immobilization apparatus includes a non-magnetic vessel having a ferromagnetic collection structure for attracting the entities toward a collection surface upon which the magnetically labeled entities are immobilized subsequent to placement of the vessel on a support between two magnets. The ferromagnetic collection structure preferably has a sharp edge or high curvature for intensifying the magnetic field and for collecting the entities in a monolayer. The vessel includes an un-obstructed observation path so that immobilized entities may be observed and/or manipulated. The ferromagnetic collection structure may be arranged in various two dimensional patterns to provide a desired collection configuration. The apparatus may further have inlet and outlet ports for allowing a flow of liquid reagent through the vessel for washing or straining the immobilized entities. The support can be translated so that a shoulder on the collection structure concentrates the collected entities by movement of the shoulder in a transverse direction relative to the magnetic field.

    摘要: An electromagnetic filter includes a filtering column filled with a magnetic material and an electromagnetic coil disposed around the filtering column. The magnetic material comprises a plurality of cylindrical, prismatic or plate-like masses of magnetic material placed horizontally in the filtering column so as to form a plurality of layers, each of the masses of magnetic material consisting of a multiplicity of magnetic wires or magnetic tapes bundled so as to have their longitudinal axes arranged in substantially in parallel.The magnetic material filling the filtering column is distributed to a uniform density, so that impairment of the treating effect due to channeling of feed water through sparse portions of the magnetic material and the insufficient washing of dense portions thereof during the cleaning operation for expelling the magnetic particles entrapped in the magnetic material can be avoided. The efficiency of the electromagnetic filter is enhanced because all of the magnetic material filling the filtering column effectively participates in the entrapment of magnetic particles suspended in the feed water.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for separating particles suspended in a liquid from the liquid. A flow of the liquid is passed through a filter bed of ferromagnetic bodies which acts as a coarse filter to trap the larger particles in the flow. The filter bed is arranged within a truncated cone between the poles of an electromagnet. To cleanse the bed and flush out the trapped particles a wash liquid is passed through the bed and the electromagnet is energized to levitate the bed to thereby allow the wash liquid to remove the particles. The liquid flow from the coarse filter can be passed to a high gradient magnetic separator at which remaining small particles in the flow are filtered magnetically.

The filter includes a filter container having an inlet, outlet, and inner space wherein an annular filter element is located. A magnetic-field generating device is surrounded by the annular filter element, and is adapted to magnetize the filter element. A fluid to be filtered is allowed to enter the filter from the inlet, and ferromagnetic particles in suspension in the fluid, when passing the filter element, are attracted thereby. The purified fluid is allowed to flow out of the filter through the outlet.

The dispersion is passed through a ferromagnetic filamentatious matrix within a canister disposed in a magnetic field. The matrix is part of a magnetic separator system characterized by a separation parameter p, where p is a function of the geometry and magnetic and electrical properties of the separating apparatus; and of the rheological and magnetic properties of the dispersion. By determinatively adjusting the packing density of the matrix in the canister, and/or by utilizing appropriate solids content in the slurry, production rate is controlled or optimized for a given brightness increase in the clay.

    摘要: Magnetic separation apparatus and method is disclosed for removing particles from a fluid-particle mixture, characterized by the provision of a plurality of parallel relatively thin-section matrix separator elements arranged within and parallel to the direction of a magnetic field, and flow establishing means for causing the mixture to flow in parallel flow paths through the matrix elements, respectively, in thickness directions transverse to the direction of the magnetic field. The matrix elements may be parallel spaced polygonal elements, or concentrically arranged annular elements. Preferably the matrix elements include a hollow non-ferromagnetic canister, and a mass of relatively short ferromagnetic fibers having a length of about 1-10 millimeters packed in the canister with a density of at least 8 percent by volume relative to the volume of the canister. Pole pieces may be provided having pole faces with projections thereon for concentrating the magnetic flux longitudinally through the longitudinally arranged matrix elements.
