A proportional hydraulic valve has a primary control spool with a force feedback actuator attached to one end, wherein the control spool meters flow of fluid to a work port. The force feedback actuator includes a piston coupled to the control spool and defining a first control chamber and a second control chamber on opposite sides of the piston. The surface of the piston has a depression with a first tapered section and a second tapered section. The force feedback actuator includes first electrohydraulic valve with a valve element that meters pressurized fluid selectively to the first and second control chambers to move the piston in opposite directions and produce motion of the control spool. A solenoid exerts a first force that on the valve element. A pilot pin engages the piston and the valve element, whereby, movement of the pilot pin on the first and second tapered sections of the piston applies a second force to the valve element. The second force corresponds to the position of the control spool and closes the valve element when the control spool is at a desired location corresponding to magnitude of the first force.

The apparatus is an oscillator for a showerhead to keep the forming fabric of a papermaking machine clean and open. A hydraulic cylinder is formed with a piston cup assembly dividing the cylinder into first and second fluid chambers. The piston cup assembly is coupled to a magnet and a driveshaft, the driveshaft being coupled, in turn, to the showerhead to be oscillated. A four-way valve is used to direct fluid from a pressurized external source alternately into said first and second fluid chambers thereby causing reciprocation of the driveshaft. The position of the magnet, and hence the driveshaft and showerhead, is monitored by a transducer which sends position and rate signals to a microprocessor-based controller. The microprocessor-based controller sends a signal to the four-way valve to direct which of said first and second fluid chambers receives fluid from the pressurized source in order to achieve the desired parameters of reciprocation. Additionally, the microprocessor-based controller provides an alarm signal should the driveshaft rate drop below a preset value.

A valve positioner has a pneumatic transducer responsive to a signal pressure for displacing a spool valve away from a neutral position to effect actuation of an actuator output shaft and further includes a gain adjustment apparatus. The pneumatic transducer includes a balance beam being operably connected at one end to the spool valve and at the other end to a hinge spring. A clamp mechanism is attached to the hinge spring and is slidably adjustable along the length of the hinge spring to vary the spring characteristics. The hinge spring tapers in thickness such that the spring increases in thickness in a direction from a first end of the spring towards the balance beam. A window or cut-out is also provided in the hinge spring to further assist in varying the spring characteristics as the clamp mechanism is moved along the hinge spring, and provide a wide range of gain adjustment over the single spring.

The system includes a double-acting fluid pressure actuator with an extension chamber and a retraction chamber separated by a piston for engaging a component of the instrument. An operating lever is pivotally mounted to the piston. The operating lever is also pivotally connected to a servo valve that has a valve spool. The valve is connected to a source of pressurized fluid and has first and second return ports for venting the fluid. The actuator extension and retraction chambers are connected with the valve for each communicating with the pressurized fluid source and with one of the return ports in response to the position of the valve spool. The system includes a feedback line communicating between the extension chamber and the valve to apply a force to the valve spool in one direction when the extension chamber is pressurized. The system also includes a sensing line communicating between the retraction chamber and the valve to apply a force to the valve spool in the opposite direction when the retraction chamber is pressurized.

The control force is transmitted to the balance beam or other force summing bar using a linear solenoid coupled to a control spring coupled to the balance beam. When the motive power control signal is removed from the linear solenoid, the balance beam establishes an equilibrium position based on the existing position of the linear solenoid. The solenoid shaft extends into a captive cylinder. A piston connected to the solenoid shaft is located in the captive cylinder and forms two chambers in the cylinder. A solenoid valve connects a port in each chamber. When the solenoid valve is activated, the piston is free to travel. When the solenoid valve is deactivated, as when the control signal is removed, the piston is held in position, locking the solenoid shaft in position. A variation for use with a current to pressure transducer is detailed.

This invention relates to a motor control unit and a feedback arrangement to minimize the effects of backlash in a rotary output system. The system includes a source of energy. The motor control has a directional control element moveable from a null position. The motor control unit is coupled to the source of energy and to a motor which in turn is coupled to the rotary output and to a second input of a differential harmonic drive that has first and second inputs and an output. The first input of the differential harmonic drive is coupled to a rotational command input unit and the differential harmonic drive output is drivingly coupled to the moveable direction control element. In response to a given rotational command input when the second input is in an initial static position, whereupon the motor is coupled to the source of energy through the motor control unit, the rotary output is driven a precise number of revolutions dependent upon the given rotational command input. The second input is simultaneously driven a given number of revolutions in a direction to provide feedback, such that the differential harmonic drive output moves to return the moveable element to the null condition, and the system is then in a condition to respond to additional rotational command input.
