Abstract:
The application describes treatment of hepatic encephalopathy using gastrointestinal specific antibiotics. One example of a gastrointestinal specific antibiotic is rifaximin.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a hepato-protective beverage composition comprising a potable liquid, a primary hepato-protective agent comprising 18β-Glycyrrhizin or 18α-Glycyrrhizin or a combination thereof, and a complimentary hepato-protective agent comprising sugar or sugar alcohol or a combination thereof. The combination of effective amounts of the primary and complimentary hepato-protective agents provides hepato-protection and reduced toxicity caused by consumption of alcoholic beverages. The present invention also provides a beverage additive comprising these hepato-protective agents designed to be mixed with a potable liquid, providing the same beneficial results.
Abstract:
The present invention provides the use of a composition comprising non-digestible oligosaccharide for the manufacture of a composition for enteral administration to an infant delivered via caesarean section.
Abstract:
The present invention provides the steroidal compound 3□-ethynyl-3□-hydroxyandrostan-17-one oxime, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, for use in treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a compound of the general formula (I) for pulmonary administration. The compound of formula (I) is suitable for treating pulmonary fibrosis, such as Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in a mammal. Furthermore the present invention concerns a method for treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, such as Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in a human subject.
Abstract:
The application describes treatment of hepatic encephalopathy using gastrointestinal specific antibiotics. One example of a gastrointestinal specific antibiotic is rifaximin. The instant application also provides methods for determining if a subject has a neurological condition or hepatic encephalopathy by determining the critical flicker frequency and/or the venous ammonia level of the subject at two or more time points. The invention further provides methods for treating these subjects.
Abstract:
Polymeric compositions are provided that include a poly(ethylene glycol), a viscoelastic polymer, and an antioxidant, where, in polymerized form, the compositions have a refractive index of about 1.30 to about 1.40. Methods of synthesizing the compositions are also provided and include the steps of heating an amount of water; adding a buffering agent to the water to form a buffer solution; mixing a poly(ethylene glycol) and a viscoelastic polymer into the buffer solution to form a reactive mixture; adding a plurality of antioxidant particles to the reactive mixture; and removing suspended gas bubbles from the reactive mixture. Methods of preventing oxidative damage to an eye lens of a subject are further provided and include administering the foregoing polymeric compositions to the eye lens of the subject.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a compound selected among the synthetic polysulphated oligosaccharides having 1 to 4 ose units and the salts and complexes thereof to be used for the treatment of wounds resulting in pathological scars selected among hypertrophic, retractile or atrophic scars. Said use is preferred in particular in patients that have a predisposition to developing hypertrophic, retractile or atrophic scars. According to a second aspect, the invention also relates to said compound for the use thereof in order to inhibit the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts during the cicatrisation of wounds resulting in pathological scars selected among hypertrophic, retractile or atrophic scars.
Abstract:
The present invention alleviates a sign or symptom of an aggregation disease or disorder by administering an aqueous formulation comprising trehalose.
Abstract:
A description is given of a cigarette having a filter apt to neutralize the damage from smoke, characterised in that said filter is soaked with a homeopathic preparation obtained from a mother tincture coming from the maceration of paper and tobacco of said cigarette, where the mixture of paper and tobacco constitutes the “homeopathic active ingredient”.
