Sliding material comprising a porous ceramic body that has the open pores filled with a high water absorbing resin, preferably to an open pores porosity of ca. 5-15%. The sliding material may be used to fabricate members of the stationary part of a journal bearing in a pump for use in both a fluid and a gaseous atmosphere; members of the rotating part of the bearing are formed of a cemented hard alloy. Since the resin absorbs and retains water, the sliding material will exhibit satisfactory performance even if it is exposed to a gaseous atmosphere without lubrication. Consistent sliding performance is insured not only in fresh water but also in fluids such as slurries that contain hard solid matter.

An improved immersible magnetically-coupled mixer has rollable bearings readily cleanable by flushing in place and easily removable and replaceable without damage to either the mixer impeller or the bearings. The rollable bearings are resistant to corrosion, capable of running without lubrication, and have low propensity for batch contamination through wear. The rolling and fixed elements of the bearings are impervious to attack by the process materials being mixed, the rollable elements, preferably balls, being formed of a hybrid ceramic such as silicon nitride, and the races being formed of either a nickel-beryllium or cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy. A mixer impeller having a central bore is rotatably mounted on the rollable bearings on a fixed impeller shaft attached to the inner wall of a vessel at the bottom of the mixing space, which shaft extends through the impeller bore. The impeller contains magnets and is couplable in driving relationship to an external magnetic mixer drive. The impeller bore is larger in diameter than the fixed shaft, and two sets of rollable bearings are disposed between the impeller and the shaft. The bearings are exposed to the liquid in the vessel during agitation, and the impeller provides a continual flow of liquid across the bearing balls and races, preventing formation of stagnant areas of process materials within the mixer assembly and permitting cleaning of all mixer surfaces by flushing.

A rotary vane compressor comprises a cylinder having two closed ends defining a cylinder chamber in which is rotatably mounted a rotor. The rotor carries a plurality of radially movable vanes which move radially into sliding contact with the inner surface of the cylinder chamber during rotation of the rotor to compress a refrigerant gas. The rotor is rotationally driven by a rotor shaft rotatably mounted by bearings in the cylinder ends. To prevent destruction of the ozone layer, a refrigerant containing no chlorine, such as HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane; CH.sub.2 FCF.sub.3) is used, and to compensate for the inferior lubricating properties of the chlorine-free refrigerant, the bearings are provided with a manganese phosphate coating of 10 .mu.m-15 .mu.m thickness to prevent cohesion and seizure of the mutually contacting surfaces of the bearings and rotor shaft.

Improved structures in bearings operable to receive and support shafts or members which are supported for rotation on shafts or pins are disclosed. In one form, just the inner cylindrical surface of a solid bearing made of metal or hard ceramic material is coated with a synthetic diamond material deposited in situ therein as carbon atoms by means of high energy radiation, which also serves to form synthetic diamond structures of layers of such carbon atoms so deposited. In another form, the entire race of a multiple part bearing is coated with synthetic diamond material. In a third form, a rolling member type bearing, such as a ball or roller bearing, is provided containing an inner race, an outer race, and a plurality of balls, rollers, or other rolling members supported between the inner and outer race. In certain instances, the rolling members are retained by means of a cage supported therebetween. The rolling members, inner and outer races, and, when employed, the cage, are all coated with hard synthetic diamond material deposited in situ thereon as described. Alternatively, select portions of the components of the bearing may be coated to the exclusion of other portions thereof. In all forms, the synthetic diamond material coating may be overcoated with thin layers of chromium, chromium alloys, or similar materials.

The first medium-carbon manganese steel includes C: 0.4 to 0.7 wt. %, Si: 0.15 to 1.2 wt. %, Mn: 1.2 to 1.7 wt. %, Al: 200 to 300 ppm, Ti: up to 40 ppm, N: 100 to 200 ppm, S: up to 80 ppm, O: 9 ppm and the balance of Fe. The second steel includes at least one of Nb: 0.03 to 0.08 wt. % and V: 0.1 to 0.15 wt. % in addition to the elements of the first medium-carbon manganese steel. The third medium-carbon manganese steel includes at least one of Nb: 0.03 to 0.08 wt. % and V: 0.1 to 0.15 wt. % instead of Al and N and includes the other elements of the first medium-carbon manganese steel. Each medium-carbon manganese steel is subject to carburizing or carbo-nitriding so as to include a case with a 25 to 45 vol. % retained austenite.
