Abstract: A method of decoding a coded video bitstream implemented by a video decoder. The method includes determining a split mode for a coding tree unit (CTU) in an encoded bitstream, where the split mode is one of triple tree (TT), vertical binary tree (BT), and horizontal BT; marking a coding unit (CU) from the CTU as not to be predicted by intra prediction when one of three conditions is met; parsing the encoded bitstream to obtain a prediction unit and residual information for the CU from the CTU; and reconstructing the CU based on the prediction unit and the residual information when the CU has been marked.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium for marking the availability of a potential candidate coding block for intra prediction mode estimation of a current coding block are provided. One example method includes obtaining a parent block of a current coding block (parentCurr), and a parent block of a candidate coding block (parentCand). The current coding block and the candidate coding block are each obtained by splitting of the parentCurr and the parentCand, respectively. In one aspect, the current coding block cannot use an intra prediction mode of a potential candidate coding block when parentCand and parentCurr are the same block, a function of a number of quadtree, ternary tree, and binary tree splitting operations is greater than a threshold minus 1, and a split mode of the parent block of the current coding block parentCurr is a ternary tree split.

Abstract: A video coding mechanism for viewpoint dependent video coding is disclosed. The mechanism includes mapping a spherical video sequence into a plurality of sub-picture video sequences. The mechanism further includes encoding the plurality of sub-picture video sequences as sub-picture bitstreams to support merging of the plurality of sub-picture bitstreams, the encoding ensuring that each sub-picture bitstream is self-referenced and two or more of the sub-picture bitstreams can be merged to generate a single video bitstream using a lightweight bitstream rewriting process that does not involve changing of any block-level coding results. A mergeable indication is encoded to indicate that the sub-picture bitstream containing the indication is compatible with a multi-bitstream merge function for reconstruction of the spherical video sequence. A set of the sub-picture bitstreams and the mergeable indication are transmitted toward the decoder to support decoding and displaying a virtual reality video viewport.
