A method of controlling the air-fuel ratio so as to be effectively maintained at a desired air-fuel ratio of .lambda.=1 is composed of a combination of an electronic map control for effecting the air-fuel ratio control on the basis of map data read out from a data map stored in ROM as air-fuel ratio control data in correspondence to various operation parameters of an engine and an O.sub.2 -feedback control for controlling the air-fuel ratio on the basis of oxygen quantity detected from the exhaust gas. Upon the occurrence of changes in the control quantity for a predetermined number of times in the course of the O.sub.2 -control, the latter is changed over to the map control. At that time point, a control quantity for the map control is corrected on the basis of a mean control quantity during the O.sub.2 -feedback control. Unless a significant variation takes place in the engine operating conditions, the map control is continued for a predetermined time and then changed over to the O.sub.2 -control. Upon the occurrence of a significant variation in the engine operating conditions, the map feedback control is immediately changed over to the O.sub.2 -control.

The cylinder fuel injection engine controller is characterized by a reference fuel injection quantity adjusting means for adjusting the reference fuel injection quantity (Tp2) for engine speed control and/or load correction during idling operation. Fuel injection quantity (Tp) to be supplied to the engine and intake air quantity (Q) are controlled simultaneously and separately on the basis of the reference fuel injection quantity (Tp2).

An apparatus for purifying an exhaust gas emitted from an internal combustion engine, particularly, immediately after starting of the engine, includes a mechanism for reducing the time required to heat a catalyst converter to the activation temperature. The exhaust gas is passed through a preliminary catalyst close to the engine and then through a main catalyst downstream of the catalyst. The engine is operated with an air-fuel mixture which is richer than the amount indicated by the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio for a period of time from when engine is started until the main catalyst is heated to a temperature at which the catalyst can sufficiently perform its purifying capability. The preliminary catalyst is enabled to function at lower temperatures by combusting the exhaust gas which is generated during a rich air-fuel mixture condition. The main catalyst can be heated with the generated combustion heat, resulting in an enhancement in exhaust gas purifying capability.

The acceleration adjustment is adjusted the fuel increment in accordance with the valve opening pulse for a fuel increment. It is possible to obtain optimum acceleration by varying the adjustment depending on conditions for interrupt adjustment during acceleration. By applying the judgment of conditions for adjustment after fuel reduction for deceleration, it has become possible to acceleration matching between the state after deceleration and the state after normal operation.
