Abstract: A bistable liquid crystal spatial light modulating (SLM) device (SLM) device utilizes the homeotropic and bubble domain texture change of a cholesteric liquid crystal that is responsive to external stimuli, such as electric voltage, light and pressure. The SLM device is configured to be switched between the two stable textures of the bubble domain texture or the fingerprint texture. In addition, the SLM device may be switched between transparent and light-scattering states by the application of an electric field, light irradiation or physical/mechanical pressure. The light transmission state and the light-scattering states of the present invention are also stable in time at zero voltage, and are reversible upon the application of an external field at a different voltage, frequency or wavelength of light.

Abstract: An apparatus that can operate with electronic ballasts (10) for electric discharge lamps to drive dc-powered lighting equipment (26) is provided. The apparatus is directly connected to the output of the electronic ballast (10) and is then used to control the power being supplied to the dc-powered lighting equipment (26). The maximum power delivered to the dc-powered lighting equipment (26) is substantially equal to the rated output power of the electronic ballast (10). A switching converter is acted as the necessary input impedance for the electronic ballast (10). Thus, the active power and reactive power drawn from the electronic ballast (10) can be controlled. The output of the switching converter provides dc power for the dc-powered lighting equipment (26).

Abstract: A diffractive optical waveguide for optical pupil expansion and a display device are provided. The diffractive optical waveguide comprises a waveguide substrate and a grating structure. The grating structure is disposed on a surface of the waveguide substrate or in the waveguide substrate and comprises a plurality of periodic structures arranged at intervals along a first direction and arranged at intervals along a second direction. The second direction is different from the first direction. A first distance between the centers of adjacent periodic structures in the first direction is smaller than a second distance between the centers of adjacent periodic structures in the second direction. The grating structure is equivalent to a one-dimensional grating with a grating vector in a vertical direction of the first direction, and the vertical direction is parallel to a plane where the grating structure is located.

Abstract: In one or more embodiments, the present invention provides am method of making a poly(propylene fumarate-co-succinate) (PPFS) copolymer containing a random incorporation of succinate groups and targetable reduction profiles without the need for three or more monomer units. To achieve this, a time-dependent sonication-promoted zinc/acetic acid reduction of the PPM unsaturated double bonds has been used to create a random PPMS copolymer which may be isomerized into the PPFS equivalent. By changing the sonication time as well as the ratios of acetic acid, zinc, and PPM unsaturated alkenes, partial reduction of the PPM alkenes has been shown to give PPMS products containing varying compositions of succinic and maleate units, which may then be isomerized to the PPFS product.

Abstract: This invention generally relates to methods and systems for dispensing a droplet, in particular a picolitre volume droplet containing one or more entities. We disclose herein a microfluidic droplet dispensing system comprising: a droplet feed line to carry droplets for dispensing; a dispensing line to carry dispensing fluid for dispensing the droplets; a droplet outlet line coupled to a droplet outlet; a first junction having a first input to receive a flow from said droplet feed line, having a second input to receive a flow from said dispensing line and having an output to said droplet outlet line; a waste line coupled to said droplet output line between said first junction and said droplet output; a first pressure source to provide pressurised dispensing fluid to said dispensing line to eject droplets from said droplet output; a droplet dispensing valve between said first pressure source and said dispensing line to control the ejection of droplets from said droplet output; wherein the system further comprises: a second pressure source to provide pressurised dispensing fluid to a droplet protect line; a second junction having a first input from said droplet feed line, having a second input from said droplet protect line, and having an output; and a volume flow throttle coupled between the output of said second junction and the first input of said first junction to restrict a volume flow from said second junction into said first junction.
