Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for dynamically changing coverage modes and/or communication bandwidth in a wireless communication system. According to some embodiments, a wireless device may attach to a serving cell associated with a cellular network. A volume of data for upcoming communication with the cellular network may be determined. An indication of a requested communication bandwidth may be provided to the serving cell. The wireless device may communicate data with the serving cell using the requested communication bandwidth. In some instances, a request for narrowband communication bandwidth may result in use of a coverage enhancement mode, while a request for wideband communication bandwidth may result in use of a normal coverage mode.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods to support parallel communication using multiple subscriber identities in a wireless communication device via multiple subscriber identity modules (SIMs) are disclosed. A representative method includes establishing a connection with a first wireless network via a first wireless cellular protocol software stack for a first subscriber identity associated with a first subscriber identity module; registering with a second wireless network via a second wireless cellular protocol software stack for a second subscriber identity associated with a second subscriber identity module; and receiving radio frequency signals from the second wireless network via the second wireless cellular protocol software stack in parallel with communicating with the first wireless network via the first wireless cellular protocol software stack. The first and second wireless cellular protocol software stacks share at least a portion of radio frequency wireless circuitry for communicating with the first and second wireless network respectively.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a user equipment device (UE) implements improved communication methods which include radio resource time multiplexing, dynamic sub-frame allocation, and UE transmit duty cycle control. In some embodiments, the UE may communicate with base stations using radio frames that include multiple sub-frames, transmit information regarding allocation of a portion of the sub-frames of a respective radio frame for each of a plurality of the radio frames, and transmit and receive data using allocated sub-frames and not using unallocated sub-frames. In some embodiments, the UE may operate according to a sub-frame allocation based on its current power state. The UE may transmit information to the base station and receive the sub-frame allocation based on at least the information. In some embodiments, the UE may switch transmit duty cycles based on an occurrence of a condition at the UE. The UE may inform the network of the switch.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to radio link monitoring techniques. According to some embodiments, a wireless device may establish a radio link with a cellular base station according to a radio access technology. The base station may provide reference signals, control signals, and data signals to the wireless device via the radio link. The wireless device may perform radio link monitoring of the radio link using characteristics of decoding performance for one or more of the control signals and the data signals. Performing radio link monitoring of the radio link may include determining whether the radio link is in-sync or out-of-sync and determining whether radio link failure has occurred.

The UE may be further configured to trigger a re-selection to the second RAT in response to the UE determining that the second RAT is preferred over the first RAT based, at least in part, on a comparison of the first and second resource requirements.

Transmission time interval bundling (TTI-B) may be enabled for uplink communications between the wireless device and the base station. It may be determined that the wireless device is experiencing uplink limited conditions. One or more rules prioritizing a first type of data over a second type of data for uplink communications may be enabled based on TTI-B being enabled and the wireless device experiencing uplink limited conditions.

Abstract: A device, system, and method uses a high power mode for a cellular connection. The method is performed at a device that is configured to establish a network connection to a network. The method includes detecting a number of at least one event that has occurred over a time period, the at least one event associated with operations used through the network connection, the at least one event indicative of a power to perform the operations that is greater than a predetermined power. When the number is at least a predetermined threshold, the method includes identifying the network connection as being in a high power state. The method includes activating settings when the network connection is in the high power state, the settings reducing a usage of the operations over the network connection.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for adaptively adjusting temporal parameters (e.g., neighbor cell search durations). In one embodiment, neighbor cell search durations during discontinuous reception are based on a physical channel metric indicating signal strength and quality (e.g. Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), Reference Signal Receive Quality (RSRQ), etc.) of a cell. In a second embodiment, neighbor cell search durations are based on a multitude of physical layer metrics from one or more cells. In one variant, the multitude of physical layer metrics may include signal strength and quality metrics from the serving base station as well as signal strength and quality indicators from neighbor cells derived from the cells respective synchronization sequences.

Abstract: A wireless communication device (UE) may reliably decode control information during wireless cellular communications. The UE may decode the Physical Control Format Indicator Channel (PCFICH) for a given wireless network, and if the decode is unsuccessful, the UE may perform a blind decode of the PCFICH. The UE may decode, for the network, a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) for a current subframe using a specified control format indicator (CFI) value. If the decode of the PDCCH is successful, the UE may communicate over the NW, using the specified CFI value. If the decode for the current subframe is unsuccessful, the UE may decode the PDCCH for a different next subframe using a different CFI value until the PDCCH for the NW has been successfully decoded. The CFI value may be specified based at least on common signaling present in certain subframes received by the UE.

Abstract: Embodiments relate to a User Equipment (UE) device and associated method performing improved data roaming with reduced cost. The UE may comprise at least one radio, one or more processors, a first SIM entity and a second SIM entity. The first SIM entity may be configured to implement subscriber identity module (SIM) functionality for a subscribed voice and/or data plan of a first carrier. The second SIM entity may be configured to facilitate dynamic subscription to a local data plan of a second carrier when the UE is data roaming outside of a network of the first carrier. As one example, the UE, using the second SIM entity, may be configured to dynamically subscribe to a pay-as-you-go data plan of a second carrier, to which the user is not subscribed, when the user is data roaming outside of the first carrier's network. This dynamic subscribing may operate to reduce cost to the user, since the local data plan of the second carrier likely has less expensive data rates than those available during normal data roaming.
