Abstract:
A spectrophotometer of the two-beam type employing two adjustable monochromators and employing a rotating chopper disc to provide time-sharing operation, such as split-beam operation, dual wavelength operation, or other desired modes of operation. The chopper disc motor is stabilized by a fiber optic feedback system and cooperating electronic system utilizing light beams reflected by the underside of the chopper disc and photo diodes responding to these reflections. The main optical system includes an adjustable lens element coupled to one of the monochromators to compensate for variations in refractive index of the lens element with wavelength. The electronic readout system is gated by the chopper disc stabilizing system to maintain synchronism of the readout signals with the two monochromatic excitation beams.
Abstract:
A bubble trap for liquid flowing in a conduit comprises an inlet port communicating with one end of a first chamber. The other end of the first chamber is closed, and a lateral port is defined in the side of the first chamber, communicating with the side of a second chamber between the ends thereof. The second chamber has an outlet port at an end opposite the inlet port, and a bubble collection port at an end adjacent the inlet port. The bubble collection port is closed with a resealable diaphragm, to permit the repeated aseptic insertion of a syringe to remove trapped gas.
Abstract:
A relatively flat rectangularly shaped container assembly having a cover, preferably of transparent material, which cover has a depending skirt that encompasses upwardly extending walls of the container. The container is constructed to contain a quantity of gelled material as a culture medium for bacteria and other microorganisms. A roller is positioned at one side for gravity movement from that side to the other side when the cover is removed and the container is inclined, whereby colonies of the microorganisms can be rapidly and uniformly isolated for identification and enumeration.
Abstract:
A photometer assembly consisting of a basic photometer unit having a photomultiplier tube projecting from its top wall. A reaction chamber is mounted over and receives the photomultiplier tube. The reaction chamber includes a stationary spool-shaped member having a shank consisting of a shell portion which surrounds the photomultiplier tube and is provided with an exposure aperture. A sample tube carrier rotatably surrounds the shank and has a vertical socket receiving a transparent sample tube, the carrier having a light duct leading from the socket to the shell portion, the duct being movable into registry with the exposure aperture so as to expose the sample tube to the photomultiplier tube in a unique position of the carrier, the sample tube being shielded from ambient light by the spool-shaped member and carrier in this position. The top of the spool-shaped member has a vertical guide tube, the guide tube registering vertically with the sample tube when the sample tube is in said unique position. Luminescence-inducing reagent or radiation may be injected into the sample tube through said guide tube, and the resulting luminescence may then be measured by the resultant signal generated by the photomultiplier tube. The top of the spool-shaped member is cut away opposite the guide tube to allow the sample tube to be inserted into and withdrawn from the socket.
Abstract:
A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND REAGENT FOR THE RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF SICKLE-CELL ANEMIA AND SICKLE-CELL TRAIT COMPRISING REACTION OF UNCLOTTED BLOOD WITH AN ADMIXTURE OF (NH4)2SO4/K2HPO4 BUFFER, PH 7-7.5, SAPONIN AND SODIUM DITHIONITE AND OBSERVATION OF THE TURBIDOMETRICCOLORMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS.
Abstract:
A cover for sealingly closing the dialysate chamber of an extracorporeal kidney apparatus and providing a flow duct for passing dialyzing fluid from the chamber. A valve in said flow duct to adjust the flow (volume/time) and vary the pressure within the dialyzing fluid compartment.
Abstract:
An artificial kidney apparatus providing a blood compartment which is entirely self-contained within its own structure. The apparatus further provides, in the self-contained assembly, structure to vary the positive pressure within a dialysate chamber and the pressure gradient across the diffusion membrane. Improved connector units provide uniform blood distribution into the diffusion membrane.
