    摘要: A protective device is provided for discontinuing the operation of an internal combustion engine having two banks of cylinders, each cylinder bank having an associated pressurized cooling circuit. Each cooling circuit has a separate pump which circulates liquid coolant by increasing the coolant fluid pressure at the pump outlet relative to the pump inlet. The protective device comprising: a pressure detector; a first valve connected to the outlet of each pump and having a biasing means for communicating the lower of the two pump outlet pressures to the pressure detector; a second valve connected to the inlet of each coolant pump and having a biasing means for communicating the higher of the two pump inlet pressures to the pressure detector; and an engine shutdown mechanism which is actuated by the pressure detector for terminating engine operation should the pressure differential between the outlet pressure and the inlet pressure communicated to the pressure detector become less than a reference (airbox) pressure.

    摘要: A marine engine is provided with an outdrive unit which incorporates a water impeller to supply water to the marine engine in order to maintain proper engine cooling. Devices are currently available that allow the watercrafts engine to be started when the craft is not in actual service. These devices attach to the crafts outdrive unit and they provide for water, from a household faucet, to be supplied to the water impeller. These devices have no form of measurement to communicate to the operator that a sufficient amount of water is initially being supplied to the water impeller to prevent damage to that component nor do they communicate if the water impeller is capable of producing sufficient suction to feed the crafts engine with sufficient coolant so that the engine will not over-heat when the craft is placed in its operating environment. Wherein, the invention consists of an impeller tester which is placed in existing outdrive water supply devices, or is permanently installed in the water craft. Wherein, the invention will communicate to the operator that a sufficient supply of water is available and the water impeller will not be damaged upon starting the crafts engine. Wherein, the invention also communicates to the operator that the water impeller is functioning properly and is producing sufficient suction to supply the marine engine with sufficient coolant so it will perform without over-heating when the outdrive unit is not supplied with a pressurized water supply.

    摘要: In order to detect cooling system malfunction, the operation of a pump which recycles the liquid coolant from a radiator (or condensor) to the coolant jacket of a vapor cooled type engine, is monitored. In the event that the pump operation period and frequency (viz., the time between changes in pump operation) fail to fall within a predetermined time schedule, a malfunction indicating signal is issued. The schedule can be varied in accordance with a signal indicative of the amount of fuel being combusted in the engine (viz., the amount of heat being produced by the engine) so as to take into the account the increased amount of coolant circulation which occurs under high engine load operation and the accompanying changes in pump operation characteristics.

    摘要: A sensor is adapted to be mounted so that it comes in contact with coolant fluid of a vehicular cooling system. When the corrosion inhibiting characteristic of the fluid is effective to prevent corrosion a first potential range is produced whereas when the characteristic is ineffective a second range exists. The effectiveness of the inhibiting characteristic can be displayed in the form of a high impedance voltmeter mounted in the dashboard or other convenient location or indicating means such as a light can be actuated when the potential reaches a threshold level indicating that the inhibiting characteristic is not effective to prevent corrosion. The sensor comprises a reference electrode used with a single sensor electrode on one embodiment and with a pair of sensor electrodes in a second embodiment.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine is provided with an engine driven pump forced cooling system that is closed to permit operation at elevated pressures and temperatures. A protective device is provided to stop or otherwise modify normal engine operation upon a failure of adequate coolant flow. The protective device is made responsive to the difference in coolant pressure between the pump inlet and outlet to eliminate any effect of cooling system pressurization upon the indication of coolant flow. Variations in normal coolant flow with engine speed are accommodated by additional means responsive to pressure in another engine fluid system, such as the air box, where the pressure varies with engine speed, such that reduction of the differential coolant pressure across the pump below a predetermined value relative to engine speed permits actuation of the protective device to stop or modify engine operation.

    摘要: The cooling liquid supply and removal ducts in the cylinder block include within the fluid circuit a separate valve shutting off communication of cooling fluid to the exhaust valve unit from the cooling fluid circuit of the engine, so that the exhaust valve seats and units can be replaced without draining cooling fluid from the engine; preferably, the high pressure and low pressure sides of the engine cooling fluid circuits are interconnected by a short circuit or bypass line which has a constriction formed therein, to which a pressure sensor can be connected, giving an alarm if there is pressure build-up, indicative of operation of the cooling fluid circuit with the valve connecting the exhaust valve cooling system of the engine being closed. The control valve itself is preferably a single unit having separated cones with flow openings therethrough.
