    Abstract: A high speed drilling system is disclosed for high speed drilling of very small holes in workpieces such as printed circuit boards. The X-Y positioning system includes air bearings to provide lift between the stationary guide beams, the crossbeam and the top table, and further includes a vacuum preloading apparatus for providing a preloading force between the table and the guide beam. The preload force dampens Z axis oscillations which can result in drill bit breakage. The top table is a lightweight honeycomb structure, whose effective rigidity is virtually that of the guide beam due to the vacuum preloading. The system includes pairs of spindles, one a conventional spindle for drilling holes larger than about 0.125 inches, and the other a high speed spindle for drilling holes in the range of about 0.003 to 0.125 inches. The high speed spindle includes a stationary spindle body carrying the stator of the rotary drive motor. Only the spindle rotor is translated along the Z axis to perform the drilling movements. The rotor is supported within the spindle body by rotary and linear air bearings, and is axially driven by a linear motor. A toolchanger loaded by clips carrying the drilling bits is mounted on the top work table, and minimizes the time required to change drilling tools. The clips minimize the manual handling of the fragile drill bits. A vacuum hold-down appratus is employed to secure the workpieces to a drilling station.

    Abstract: A special clamping block in combination with a screw clamp fitted with a pair of bores, one bore provided on the top face of the screw clamp and the other bore provided on the outer side face of the screw clamp, the special clamping block having a clamping ring at the end thereof adapted to receive the neck of an electrical hand drill at said end and having a projection plug which fits either into the top face bore of the screw clamp or the outer side face bore whereby the drill may be positioned to the side of the screw clamp or over the top surface thereof.In a preferred embodiment a molded one piece clamping block is formed with supporting struts to strengthen the structure and adjustable clamping projections or fingers are provided at the inner edge of the clamping ring closest to the projecting plug which permit tightening of the clamping ring by tightening screws passing perpendicularly through said fingers to close the slit therebetween or to open the slit by loosening the screws to permit removal of the electrical drill.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a machine for drilling and boring tubular plates, the workpiece-carrying elevator being embedded, weight compensation being provided by appropriate means, the machining units moving substantially at ground level opposite thrust tubes bearing on the plate before each machining cycle and absorbing tool thrusts. The machine is characterized by an elevator which supports the plate for machining and which moves on slideways with balancing by hydraulic rams in a constant proportion to the weight of the workpiece being machined. Thrust means retain the thrusts of the spindles, the movements of the latter spindles and means being synchronized by means, the tilting torque produced by the thrust of the spindles is limited by the provision at ground level of a closed framing which interconnects all the constituent elements.     Abstract: The balancing construction is applicable to a machine tool of the type including an upright column movably supported on a bed, a saddle movable vertically along the column, and a headstock displaceable laterally of the column while being guided by the headstock. The saddle is connected to a respective balance weight by a pair of flexible connecting elements trained over pulleys on the opposite ends of a pair of arms supported on top of the column. A pair of suspension arms are mounted on the upper end of the column for oscillation in a horizontal plane about a vertical pivot axis at one end of each suspension arm, the pivot axis including a tubular pivot. Respective conical rollers support each suspension arm for rolling over the top of the column during the horizontal oscillation, and the two arms are interconnected for movement parallel to each other. Each arm has a pulley at each end, and a pair of flexible connectors are trained over these pulleys to connect the headstock to a respective balance weight movable vertically of the column. These latter flexible connecting elements extend vertically through the tubular pivot axes of the respective arms. A synchronizing mechanism interconnects the headstock to the two suspension arms to synchronize the horizontal oscillation of the suspension arms with a lateral displacement of the headstock.
