摘要:
A carburetor communicating with an intake manifold of an internal-combustion engine receives preheated air through an annular filter heated electrically during a cold-starting phase and fluidically with the engine in operating condition, the air passing around a flap valve--acting as an automatic choke--into a mixing chamber to aspirate a volatile hydrocarbon such as gasoline from a main fuel tank. The flap valve is heated in the same manner as the filter, and so are a pair of accelerator-controlled throttle valves separating the mixing chamber from a further compartment into which a heavier hydrocarbon such as diesel oil is aspirated in vaporized form after passing from an ancillary fuel tank through a boiling cylinder heated by the exhaust gases of the engine. The fuel/air mixture enriched with the diesel-oil vapors enters the intake manifold where any residual droplets are intercepted by a stationary plate which is also heated and, like the throttle valves, is coated with an adsorbent layer of metal gauze or wicking to promote evaporation. The boiling cylinder, located in the exhaust duct or a branch thereof, may be journaled for rotation by the exhaust gases or may have a recirculating conduit including a pump driven by these gases for preventing the accumulation of liquid hydrocarbons therein.

This invention is concerned with carburetion of gasoline for the purpose of reducing the consumption of gasoline and preventing pollution. The procedure for carrying out this function is by evaporation and osmosis. In the lower chamber of the carburetor where the liquid gasoline is located are immersed a plurality of special tubes. The tubes have in their lower portion on the inside surface an absorbant material, and wicks extending therefrom. In the upper portion of the tubes where the wicks are located, there are a plurality of lateral openings. The gasoline is located in a lower chamber where the tubes are immersed. The upper portion of the tubes are not immersed in the gasoline. When the motor is turned on, the intake valve opens and air is drawn through the air filter in the carburetor and down into the tubes. The air contacts the wicks in the tubes, vapor is formed, and passes through the openings thereof into a chamber which has a protective material located therein. From this chamber, the vapors of gasoline pass into the intake tube and are metered by the butterfly valve for delivery to the manifold and distribution to the cylinders of the engine. There is also provided a valve in proximity to the intake arrangement to insure the release of any back pressure which develops during a backfire. This valve is designed to open automatically and release the pressure so as to prevent damage within the carburetor.

A simplified carburetor employing one or more porous fuelabsorbing filter elements to dispense fuel into the air drawn therethrough on its way to the engine manifold. In a simple and efficient way the fuel-air ratio supplied is essentially constant at all normal operating speeds. Pollution is reduced to a minimum.

An apparatus and method for improving the transient response of a spark-ignited fuel-injected internal combustion engine is disclosed. This is accomplished by employing one or more novel capillary fuel injectors. These devices are port fuel injectors modified by inserting one or more relatively small diameter heated tubular capillaries between the fuel line and a conventional injector. Sufficient heating can be produced so that flash vaporization occurs as the fuel exits the injector. The heaters are turned on using control algorithms that can be based on exhaust gas oxygen concentration, load on the engine, and accelerator pedal position.

For better automotive fuel economy and environmental quality in an engine, a mixture heating chamber is attached to an engine exhaust manifold. A U-shaped air tube is connected to the mixture heating chamber for supplying heated air to the chamber. A vapor supply fuel line supplies the mixture heating chamber with liquid fuel, the liquid fuel being sprayed from the vapor supply fuel line into a portion of the U-shaped air tube located inside the mixture heating chamber resulting in the vaporization of the liquid fuel. The mixture heating chamber is partially filled with copper pads for fire retarding purposes. The interior of the mixture heating chamber is lined with a felt-liner which retains the liquid fuel present and also acts as a wick. A fuel selector switch allows fuel to be channelled through a vapor supply fuel line and into the mixture heating chamber or alternatively into a main fuel line which connects directly to the carburetor of the vehicle. An outlet tube connects to the mixture heating chamber and allows fuel vapors to travel to a carburetor adaptor located on top of the carburetor.

An improved carburetor for an internal combustion engine which eliminates the conventional automatic choke mechanism. A pair of fabric absorbent wicks are suspended in the vaporizing chamber of the carburetor in alignment with the high speed gasoline jets. The wicks partially surround the respective venturis and hang downwardly within the chamber to a level beneath the venturis. On starting of the engine, a manually operated primer pump operates to discharge fuel through the jets into contact with the wicks to thereby saturate the absorbent material. The absorbed fuel is vaporized and drawn along with air into the engine.

In vaporization means for liquid fuel for an internal combustion engine, the mixture strength is measured and used to control the rate of flow of liquid fuel into the air stream so as to maintain the mixture strength constant. Measurement of mixture strength is effected by measuring the temperature drop in the air flow due to the latent heat of the liquid fuel.
