Disclosed is a method for producing a stage for amplifying the power of a variable envelope signal including at least one amplifier. For each amplifier, a form of ideal variation in average power POUTL is selected. For each value of each setting parameter and for each average input power value, a value of an optimisation criterion is calculated on the basis of the mathematical expectation of at least one optimisation parameter. An optimum value of each setting parameter is determined and the amplification stage is produced with a number of amplifiers in parallel determined on the basis of an average output power value and with, for each amplifier, matching circuits providing the optimum values of the setting parameters. The invention also relates to an amplification stage produced in this manner.

The invention is directed to an amplifier circuit with adjustable gain which includes a plurality of parallel-connected differential amplifiers connected to a common cascode stage. An actuation unit is used to activate the differential amplifiers independently of one another on the basis of an applied control signal. The principle described makes it possible to dispense with inductances in the differential amplifier and hence to reduce unwanted crosstalk, while having a high linearity. Secondly, the amplifier's drawn current matches the respective output power which can be tapped off. Overall, the principle described is particularly suitable for use in UMTS mobile radios.

A technique to boost the output power of portable radio terminals without increasing the power dissipation is described. The input to the terminal transmit amplifier is modified by a peak-to-average reduction and amplitude pre-distortion circuit, prior to being applied to the amplifier. The peak-to-average reduction and pre-distortion circuit clips the baseband samples before applying any amplitude pre-distortion if they exceed a predefined value The peak-to-average reduction and pre-distortion circuit uses a lookup table to pre-distort the peak-to-average reduced signal. The amplitude pre-distortion lookup table is being updated at power up or power down of the terminal radio, during idle time, just before origination of a call, before termination of a call, or while the call is active. During the updating of the lookup table the radio could be in its normal transmit mode, or transmit into a dummy load using an analog transmit switch controlled from the peak-to-average reduction and pre-distortion circuit.
